Dromedar hijacking

The Dromedar incident, which transpired during the time of the Imperial Era, involved the freighter named Dromedar. It was attacked and subsequently seized by a pirate group known as Culoss, under the direction of the rebel leader Nevil Cygni. The pirate faction imprisoned the freighter's crew and took control of the ship's shipment of tibanna. When an Imperial team, headed by Lieutenant Thrawn, responded to the Dromedar's distress signal, they were met by Cygni, who set a trap for the Imperials. Nevertheless, Thrawn outmaneuvered his captors by employing a buzz droid to create an opening in their confinement, exposing sections of the vessel to the emptiness of space. Despite these actions, Cygni, along with some of his accomplices, successfully escaped with the stolen tibanna containers.

Prelude

Nevil Cygni, undercover pirate

In the Imperial Era, the Galactic Empire was challenged by several groups of insurgents that posed a threat to their control over the galaxy. Among these figures was the insurgent commander Nevil Cygni, a member of the pirate organization Culoss, which originated from Q'anah's Marauders. He viewed the Empire as a morally bankrupt and oppressive regime that was harming the galaxy. Cygni was involved in the illicit trade of doonium and tibanna with the intention of accumulating resources to assist those he believed had been wronged by the Empire.

History

The Dromedar functioned as a freighter commanded by Captain Fitz, with a crew that included Toom among others. At some point before 3 BBY, Nevil managed to infiltrate the Dromedar by disguising himself as a new member of the crew. His fellow Culoss pirates launched an assault on the freighter as it transported Tibanna gas. They subdued the crew and confined them within a metal enclosure located in the cargo bay of their pirate vessel, the Marauder. The Dromedar's emergency transmission was intercepted by the Imperial Gozanti-class cruiser named Blood Crow, under the command of Captain Filia Rossi. Captain Rossi reluctantly dispatched a boarding party, consisting of Lieutenant Thrawn and his team—Ensigns Eli Vanto and Merri Barlin, along with engineering technician Jakeeb and electronics technician [Layneo]—to investigate the distress call of the Dromedar before addressing a crisis occurring on Moltok.

They encountered Nevil Cygni alongside his crew, who falsely claimed that their associates had been abducted by pirates. Cygni deceived Thrawn into revealing the method for extracting tibanna from its containers by deactivating their static locks. Thrawn, however, was aware of Cygni's true identity as a pirate due to his unkempt attire, but he feigned ignorance to manipulate Cygni. Despite Rossi's reservations, Thrawn persuaded her to permit him and his team to remain aboard the Dromedar to safeguard the crew. Following the Blood Crow's departure for Moltok, Cygni inquired with the Imperials about the procedure for extracting tibanna from the cylinders. After Thrawn and his team shared this information, Cygni and his pirate accomplices revealed their true intentions and disarmed Thrawn and his team. The Imperials were then imprisoned within the makeshift brig on the pirate ship Marauder alongside the Dromedar's actual crew. A pirate known as Angel expressed a desire to kill them, but Cygni refused, insisting that Angel honor his commitment to release the prisoners unharmed.

Subsequently, Cygni and Angel departed aboard the Dromedar with the stolen tibanna shipment. Before their departure, Cygni left behind one of Thrawn's buzz droids to assess the Chiss captain's determination. With support from the Imperial technicians, Thrawn successfully reactivated the buzz droids he had brought and utilized one to create an opening in the cage's structure. The Imperials and the Dromedar's crew then overwhelmed the pirates who had been left to guard the Marauder. Furthermore, Thrawn had secretly attached another buzz droid to the ship's exterior. This buzz droid then exposed the Marauder's entrance chamber and midship section to the void of space, eliminating the remaining pirates while preserving the ship's structural integrity.

Aftermath

Lieutenant Thrawn interrogating the surviving pirates

Despite the successful rescue of the Dromedar's crew, Lieutenant Thrawn received criticism for failing to prevent the pirates from absconding with the freighter and its tibanna cargo, the latter being a crucial resource for the Imperial Navy. Thrawn and Ensign Vanto were instructed to remain on Ansion. Despite this setback, Thrawn seized the opportunity to assist Admiral Plor Wiskovis in interrogating three of the surviving pirates. Recognizing that the pirates were descendants of Q'anah's Marauders, Thrawn managed to persuade them to cooperate by promising protection from Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin. While the pirates deliberated Thrawn's proposition, Thrawn employed his knowledge of Sy Bisti to eavesdrop on their conversation, discovering that Angel and Cygni had escaped with the Dromedar to Uba. In an attempt to deceive Thrawn, the pirates falsely claimed that Angel and Cygni had traveled to Cartherston on the planet Keitum. After the pirates accepted Thrawn's offer, Thrawn revealed the information he had obtained from the eavesdropping to Wiskovis.

Acting on this intelligence, Admiral Wiskovis dispatched an Imperial Security Bureau operative to Uba. Although the Imperials managed to recover the containers and apprehend additional pirates, they discovered that the pirates had extracted the tibanna from twelve of the twenty recovered tibanna cylinders. Despite the blockade, Angel and Cygni evaded the Imperial authorities. Thrawn was later cleared of wrongdoing by an Imperial court-martial panel and promoted to Captain of the Arquitens-class light cruiser named Thunder Wasp. Employing his Nightswan alias, Cygni later contracted smugglers on an oceanic planet to smuggle iridium concealed within mollusk shells to accumulate funds for purchasing Vulture droid components. However, this scheme was thwarted by Thrawn, who persisted in his pursuit of Nightswan.
