"Friends and Enemies" marks the sixteenth installment of the animated television show, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, specifically from its fourth season. Following "Deception," this episode serves as the second chapter within a narrative arc spanning four episodes, focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi's secret mission to expose the plot to assassinate Chancellor Palpatine. It was originally broadcast on January 27, 2012.
After successfully evading the initial pursuit by the Republic forces, "Rako Hardeen" (actually Obi-Wan Kenobi in disguise) deliberately crashes their vessel in the swamps of Nal Hutta to further confuse their pursuers. Subsequently, he, Moralo Eval, and Cad Bane head towards the Bilbousa Bazaar with the intention of acquiring replacement gear and a new spaceship. During their shopping venture, Bane displays excessive force towards Pablo, the Rodian proprietor of a local pawnshop, almost killing him with a toothpick for not remaining silent. To prevent attracting unwanted attention, Bane instructs Kenobi to purchase a new vessel while he and Eval secure weaponry.
However, once the transaction is completed, Bane betrays Obi-Wan, handing him over to the local authorities who were alerted by Pablo's assistant, due to his lingering distrust. Anticipating this treachery, Obi-Wan had previously attached a tracking device to the ship's exterior. When interrogated by the Hutt's guards, he divulges the tracking frequency, and while the guards engage in shooting down the ship, he manages to escape the dungeon. After communicating with Yoda and Mace Windu, he requests that they cease the manhunt to enable unrestricted movement and provide funds for a new ship. Obi-Wan is then reunited with Eval and an angered Bane, who narrowly escaped the Hutt's forces, just in time to present them with their newly acquired vessel.
Meanwhile, on Coruscant, Mace Windu requests that Palpatine call off the pursuit of the fugitives. However, Anakin, who is visiting the Chancellor and remains ignorant of the clandestine mission, disagrees with this decision. Palpatine capitalizes on this by intentionally dispatching him and Ahsoka to Nal Hutta. Following some brutal questioning of the local inhabitants by Anakin, the two Jedi uncover the likely destination of the fugitives' ship. The ship seller intentionally provided just enough fuel to necessitate a visit to his brother's refueling station on Orondia. Upon spotting their targets preparing for departure, Anakin attempts to disable the ship by ramming it and boarding it mid-flight. However, Bane thwarts this plan, resulting in a crash-landing of both vessels during a frantic pursuit through a nearby fuel-processing facility.
Obi-Wan exits the ship to reveal the truth to Anakin, but is almost killed when his friend attacks him in a fit of rage. Bane captures Anakin and intends to kill him, but fails. In the ensuing conflict, Obi-Wan wrestles with Anakin and addresses him by name before Anakin loses consciousness. Ahsoka arrives just as Bane is about to eliminate Anakin, but with her master unconscious and the fugitives' ship still operational, she is unable to prevent their escape. However, as Anakin regains consciousness shortly afterward, he reveals his discovery that Obi-Wan is alive and working undercover, and resolves to uncover the reason behind it. Simultaneously, Yoda and Windu learn from Palpatine that he has sent Anakin after the fugitives. Consequently, the two Jedi Masters decide to reveal the truth to Skywalker, fearing that he might jeopardize the mission or face even greater consequences.
The helmet used for Obi-Wan's disguise is a recolored version derived from an early conceptual design for the helmet worn by Boba Fett.
During the scene in Pablo's shop with Cad Bane, Eval, and Obi-Wan, a Phase I clone trooper helmet can be briefly observed among the other items.
While Cad Bane is searching for a new hat, he momentarily considers the iconic fedora worn by Indiana Jones.
When Obi Wan asks to be freed after giving the tracking frequency on Eval´s ship, the henchmen answers: "The deal has changed", paying homage to Darth Vader on The Empire Strikes Back.
