The Galactic Alliance Department of Justice, also known as the Ministry of Justice, served as a branch within the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances. This organization was established within the Galactic Alliance framework to succeed its antecedent, the New Republic Ministry of Justice. The primary responsibilities of the Justice Department included the prosecution of legal cases and the enforcement of laws to maintain order. Furthermore, it oversaw the operations of the Alliance Marshals, who were tasked with conducting investigations for the Department and fulfilling various other necessary duties, such as the transportation of prisoners to and from judicial proceedings.

Following the Solo-Niathal coup, the Justice Department took charge of the government's legal proceedings against the ousted Chief of State, Cal Omas. However, Omas and his legal representatives raised concerns about the Department's delay in filing formal charges against him after his arrest. The case never proceeded to trial because Omas later committed suicide.
In the aftermath of the Second Galactic Civil War, Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Grand Master, faced accusations of neglecting his duties by allowing Jacen Solo to succumb to the dark side of the Force and seize control of the Alliance. The trial concluded with Skywalker being exiled for a decade, unless he could uncover the reasons behind Jacen's fall to darkness.
As the relationship between Chief of State Natasi Daala and the Jedi Order worsened, the Chief of State managed to put Jedi under surveillance. Alliance Marshals were appointed as Jedi supervisors to ensure that Jedi Knights adhered to Galactic Alliance laws.
The Justice Department initiated a criminal case against Tahiri Veila, a former Jedi, Sith, and Galactic Alliance Guard Lieutenant, for the murder of Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon.
Subsequently, the Justice Department instructed Trinnolt Makken to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Acting Grand Master Kenth Hamner. Hamner had been killed during a lightsaber duel with fellow Jedi Master Saba Sebatyne. However, the Justice Department grappled with the question of whether a death resulting from a lightsaber duel constituted a crime for which Master Sebatyne could be charged.
