High Flight Squadron

High Flight Squadron, an X-wing unit of the New Republic, found itself stationed aboard the Quasar Fire-class carrier known as the Battle Dog. This assignment occurred during the Zsinj campaign, specifically in the year 7 ABY. The squadron's insignia showcased an X-wing soaring over a mountain summit. As part of a strike group led by Commander Wedge Antilles, the squadron participated in the assault on Warlord Zsinj's flagship, the Iron Fist, during the Battle of Selaggis. Years later, while serving on the Star Destroyer Allegiance, the squadron engaged in the Battle of Adumar, defending the planet against the Galactic Empire's attempted takeover.

History

During 7 ABY, High Flight Squadron, a New Republic Starfighter Command X-wing unit, was assigned to the Quasar Fire-class carrier Battle Dog during the campaign to locate the renegade Warlord Zsinj, as a component of General Han Solo's fleet. Commander Wedge Antilles of the New Republic's Rogue Squadron commanded a task force of the fleet's starfighters, including High Flight Squadron, in the Battle of Selaggis—one of the fleet's encounters during the hunt—to strike Zsinj's flagship, the Super Star Destroyer Iron Fist, which was confined to the Selaggis system due to the sabotage of double agent Lara Notsil.

Commander Wedge Antilles led High Flight Squadron in the Battle of Selaggis.

Antilles, along with his forces, moved into the ring field that encircled the planet Selaggis VI. High Flight and Corsair Squadrons received orders to advance spinward of the planet to locate the enemy warship, while Rogue and Wraith Squadrons flew counter-spinward, and Shadow and Polearm Squadrons embarked on scouting missions. After spotting Iron Fist within the asteroid field, the New Republic forces prepared their attack. However, Myn Donos, Wraith Three, called off the ambush, suspecting a trap. During the subsequent maneuvers, Iron Fist fired on the asteroids, generating a debris shield. High Flight Three sustained damage from the debris and was forced to shut down, while Shadow Twelve suffered death. Following prolonged combat that resulted in significant New Republic starfighter losses, Zsinj evaded Solo's fleet. He deceived the New Republic forces into believing they had destroyed his Super Star Destroyer by utilizing a sensor-blocking nightcloak system and the decoy ship Second Death.

In 13 ABY, High Flight Squadron was stationed aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Allegiance when Antilles, who had risen to the rank of General, engaged in negotiations with the inhabitants of the planet Adumar to facilitate their entry into the New Republic. At this time, Antilles reflected on his conviction that the squadron was a seasoned unit with extensive combat experience. During the ensuing Battle of Adumar, when the Galactic Empire attempted to conquer the system, Antilles led a total of 106 starfighters into the fray. High Flight Squadron was positioned in the forward screen alongside three other units, while the remaining forces were held in reserve. As Antilles authorized individual actions for the pilots, High Flight Twelve reported the approach of Imperial starfighters. In the resulting conflict, one of the High Flight pilots was killed. The battle concluded with a New Republic and Adumari Union alliance victory after the Imperials endured substantial losses and the lead Star Destroyer, Agonizer, sustained considerable damage.

Organization

The Incom T-65 X-wing starfighters were flown by the members of High Flight Squadron. The squadron's insignia displayed a solitary X-wing in flight above a mountain peak.

Behind the scenes

High Flight Squadron made its debut in X-Wing: Solo Command, a novel penned by Aaron Allston and released on February 2, 1999. Allston's subsequent novel, X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar, which was released on August 3 of the same year, featured a pilot with the call sign High Flight Beta. The novel did not specify whether it was a separate squadron, but the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia verified that the two High Flight Squadrons were distinct entities.
