Ironstone

Ironstone was a durable type of rock that existed on the Outer Rim Territories planet of Elphrona, specifically in a region situated between two sets of hills. During 232 BBY, a band of Nihil marauders were moving kidnapped members of the Blythe family through this area. One of the captives was ejected from the repulsorcart holding the Blythes, leading Erika Blythe to believe the Nihil had caused her skull to crack against the ironstone on the ground. Later, Jedi Master Porter Engle, in pursuit of the Nihil group, used telekinesis to hurl his lightsaber at a Nihil who was acting as a sniper from one of the hills. The weapon sliced through both the raider and the ironstone formation he was using for cover.

Description

A hard form of rock, ironstone was present on the planet Elphrona, located in the Outer Rim Territories. In a specific area of the world, steep ironstone formations created a narrow passage between two clusters of hills composed of iron and magnetite.

History

A Nihil operation on Elphrona (pictured) took place in a region that featured ironstone.

Back in 232 BBY, a group of Nihil marauders were in the process of transporting kidnapped individuals from the Blythe family along a dirt path. The path was situated in the area of Elphrona between the two hill formations, and they were headed toward the Nihil's starships. When Ottoh Blythe instructed the family's steelees—which the Nihil had commandeered from their homestead for transporting both the family and the captives—to abruptly cease their gallop, the Nihil were jolted forward. This included the Trandoshan woman who was guarding the Blythes within a steelee-drawn repulsorcart. Subsequently, Erika Blythe heard a distinct, solid sound, a combination of a snap and a thud, which she interpreted as the woman's skull shattering against the ironstone surface.

Later, as the Nihil fled toward their ships, two of them, Egga and Rel, positioned themselves as snipers on the hillsides forming the canyon's walls. Their objective was to fire upon the group of Jedi who were in pursuit. One of the two Nihil shot the steelee Jedi Master Porter Engle was riding, and one of the snipers also shot at Engle's back. The Jedi deflected the shots aimed at him and leaped high into the air, in the process spotting the Nihil who had targeted him. Engle then used telekinesis to throw his lightsaber. The Nihil sought shelter behind an ironstone projection, but the lightsaber pierced through both the rock and the Nihil, resulting in his death.

Behind the scenes

Ironstone was featured in the 2021 novel titled Light of the Jedi, penned by Charles Soule as a component of Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I. In reality, ironstone is a specific type of sedimentary rock where the proportion of iron exceeds fifteen percent.
