Knight Errant: Escape #2 represents the second installment within the Escape story arc, a miniseries that is part of the broader Star Wars: Knight Errant comic book series penned by John Jackson Miller.
Jedi Knight Kerra Holt finds herself embedded with Sith reconnaissance forces, who are on the hunt for a powerful artifact. This situation allows her to observe firsthand the conflicts raging between various Sith lords. The pervasive destruction she witnesses causes Kerra to seriously question her objectives. However, traumatic memories push her forward, overriding her moral compass. Kerra is sinking further into the Sith's world. Can she manage to escape?
Following the events that transpired during the Aquilaris campaign, Kerra Holt, a Jedi Knight, goes undercover within the ranks of the Odionate as a Sith acolyte. Her goal is to locate her missing parents and younger sibling. Odion, the Sith Lord, dispatches Kerra, now using the alias "Mercy," along with a Sith contingent to the planet Sarrassia. Their mission is to retrieve the Helm of Ieldis, an ancient Sith relic with the ability to incite murderous rage in individuals. On their way to Sarrassia, Kerra experiences a flashback to her childhood during the invasion of her home world, Aquilaris. Her parents instructed her to seek refuge at Capital Cay's harbor, where they planned to escape aboard a Seacropper Submersible alongside Joad Kreel's family. However, her parents never arrived, and upon returning to their home, Kerra discovered their disappearance. During the invasion of Sarrassia, the Odionate forces swiftly subdued all resistance and enslaved the population. Children were forcibly separated from their parents. Doyan, Kerra's commander, assigned the Novitiates to a cleanup operation targeting Grumani Hierophants situated on Mount Diligence.
During the ensuing combat, the Sith forces suffered considerable casualties due to friendly fire when Yulan's artillery mistakenly bombarded their own trenches. After eliminating all opposition, the Novitiates began exploring the subterranean caves beneath Mount Diligence. Kerra became separated from her companions and stumbled upon the Great Temple located beneath the mountain. Inside, she encountered Aunt Zoojoo, a childhood friend, who provided her with additional information regarding the Helm of Ieldis and the fate of her missing parents. Kerra discovered that her parents had visited Sarrassia seven years ago as part of Project Pandemonium, with the intention of locating the Helm. However, their true objective was to conceal the Helm from Odion's grasp. Ultimately, the Hierophants pledged to defend Mount Diligence at all costs against the Sith, while Kerra's parents sought to prevent Odion from acquiring the Helm. Her parents journeyed to Skarpos, the last known location of the Helm, and were never heard from again.
Kerra also knew that her mother, Mercia, was pregnant at the time of their separation. She came to the conclusion that her mother had given birth to a younger sibling while in Sith captivity, although Zoojoo was unable to confirm these details. Upon learning that the Helm was located on Skarpos, Kerra informed Zoojoo of her determination to stop Odion and find her parents. Zoojoo vehemently disagreed, arguing that such actions would only lead Odion to the Helm. Their discussion was interrupted by the arrival of Yulan and several Sith Novitiates. During the resulting confrontation, Zoojoo took her own life by detonating a remotely triggered bomb, burying the temple under tons of rubble. Mercy survived the explosion and informed Yulan that the Helm was located on Skarpos, feigning loyalty to Odion's cause while secretly seeking to find a clue that would lead her to her parents.
