Story Synopsis

Ryland, a Rebel trooper, is stationed at the Great Temple located on Yavin 4. This temple serves as the central headquarters for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Because the rebel base on Yavin 4 is considered a valid military target, Ryland has arranged for his daughter, Laina, to reside with her aunts, Eron and Rhee. Subsequently, Ryland returns to his post as a lookout, ascending to the top of Gold Tower where he authorizes the departure of transport Echo Delta One, the vessel carrying his daughter Laina. Overcome with emotion, Ryland sheds tears as he observes the transport carrying his daughter leaving.

Previously, specifically eighteen hours before, Ryland records a video message using a camera intended for Laina, who is peacefully sleeping in her crib. Ryland's age is 38 standard years, while his daughter Laina is two years old. He informs Laina that they arrived six months prior, shortly after the death of her mother, Fiona. He describes their past as mechanics working in an underground mining colony located on a moon within the Outer Rim Territories. Ryland remembers Fiona as intelligent, compassionate, and a highly skilled mechanic. Ryland points out to Laina that she inherited her mother's beautiful eyes and his own ears. He also mentions that Fiona had a passion for mathematics and music, and she would sing "Mama Moon" to Laina daily.

Ryland then recounts that the Empire seized control of their company, citing dubious claims of non-compliance with safety regulations. He clarifies that the Empire's motivation was the acquisition of doonium, and they were prepared to seize anything they desired. Ryland then reveals to Laina that he and her mother Fiona were falsely accused by an informant named Corbin. Ryland explains that Corbin had compelled him and Fiona to work additional shifts and had prevented Fiona from taking Laina to the canteen. When Fiona defended him, Corbin reported to the Imperial officer Duggan that Ryland and Fiona were rebel spies. Subsequently, Duggan and his loyalty officers commanded Ryland and Fiona to falsely admit to being rebel spies in front of everyone present. Duggan then fatally shot Fiona in Ryland's presence.

Ryland clarifies that this event motivated him to enlist in the Rebellion. He explains that every member of the Rebel Alliance had lost something, someone, or some place that they cherished. He explained that he had lost all three. He assures Laina that Aunt Rhee and Aunt Eron assisted their family in escaping the Empire and will provide excellent care for her. He reassures Laina that they love her deeply and will transport her to a secure location known as Alderaan. Ryland concludes the recording and saves the file. Ryland approaches his daughter's crib and gently awakens her for the journey. Following his watch, Ryland declines an offer from the pilots of Blue Squadron to join them at the canteen. After reflecting on his daughter, his neighbor Mol Hastur assures Ryland that he made the correct decision and that the Force is with his daughter.
