Leia Organa's blue lightsaber was wielded by the Princess during her time as a Jedi Padawan, undergoing training with her brother, the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. She constructed this Jedi weapon soon after the Battle of Endor, and engaged in sparring sessions with Skywalker using it. After sensing the death of her son at the conclusion of her Jedi journey, Organa ceased her training and entrusted the lightsaber to Skywalker. He retained it until his demise at the Battle of Crait. A year later, during the final days of the war between the First Order and the Resistance, Skywalker gifted the weapon to Rey.

The lightsaber of Leia Organa featured a blue blade, energized by a kyber crystal located within the hilt. Its color scheme incorporated silver and copper elements, enhanced by mother-of-pearl inlays. This weapon was esteemed as a work of art, displaying a refined symmetry with gold and silver undertones reminiscent of her upbringing on Alderaan. The saber's ringed emitter and narrowneck bore a resemblance to Luke Skywalker's green blade. The crystal heart that powered the saber was encircled by curved metal grips around the midsection.

During the rescue of Luke Skywalker from Grakkus Jahibakti Tingi, R2-D2 ejected four lightsabers towards Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Organa. Organa seized one of these weapons and employed it to defend against the stormtroopers brought in by Kreel, remarking that she had always desired to wield one.
In 4 ABY, following the Battle of Endor, Organa commenced training on Ajan Kloss with her brother, Luke, who was by then a fully trained Jedi Knight. She utilized her lightsaber for sparring sessions during her apprenticeship as her twin brother's first Padawan and demonstrated considerable skill with it. Shortly afterward, in 5 ABY, Organa discontinued her training after informing Skywalker that she had foreseen the death of her son at the conclusion of her Jedi journey.

While Skywalker hoped his sister would eventually resume her training, Organa gave him her lightsaber to dissuade him, requesting that he pass it on to a promising student in the future. However, Skywalker kept the saber and never revealed its location to Organa. Eventually, Skywalker went into exile on Ahch-To, taking the saber with him and storing it within his hut. After Skywalker's death, his Force spirit gave Organa's lightsaber to Rey, believing Organa would want the Jedi Padawan, whom she had begun training herself, to possess her weapon.

During the Battle of Exegol between the Resistance and the Sith Eternal, Rey combined her master's lightsaber with the Skywalker lightsaber to redirect Darth Sidious' Force lightning back at the Sith Master, ultimately defeating him. After the events on Exegol, Rey constructed her own lightsaber and transported both Organa's lightsaber and Skywalker's original lightsaber to the Lars Homestead on Tatooine, where she used the Force to bury the weapons together in the sand.

Leia's lightsaber was designed for the 2019 movie, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, the concluding chapter of The Skywalker Saga. According to Lucasfilm Archivist Madlyn Burkert, the design of the saber was inspired by the Art Deco style of the 1930s.
When Carrie Fisher appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote her book, The Princess Diarist, she said she preferred the color purple for her lightsaber.
