Lightle bug

Lightle bugs represented a species of vibrant, fluttering insects native to the world of Tenoo. These creatures possessed the ability to emit light in a spectrum of colors, notably pink, yellow, and blue, a trait that correlated with their external appearance. Beyond their luminous displays, lightle bugs were characterized by four dark purple, pupil-less eyes, a set of six legs, a diminutive mandible, and a pair of wings.

During the era known as the High Republic Era, Jedi Initiate Kai Brightstar had an encounter with a lightle bug while in a meditative state with Padawan Bell Zettifar on the planet Tenoo. In that same year, the Jedi initiate Lys Solay guided a group of younger initiates toward Tenoo's forest with the intention of observing the lightle bugs prior to the arrival of night. Despite a delay caused by a spirited pursuit involving a Sharptailed Fellwing, the group still managed to witness the captivating, brilliantly colored insects in flight. Brightstar later came across another lightle bug during an excursion in Tenoo's forest, accompanied by Marlaa Jinara and Maz Kanata.

Biology and appearances

The lightle bug was a diminutive, airborne insect known for emitting radiant colored light, including shades of pink, yellow, and blue. This particular insect species was equipped with four dark purple [eyes](/article/eye] lacking pupils, six legs, a small mandible, and a pair of delicate wings. Its coloration varied based on the color of light it projected. Lightle bugs were commonly observed in flight within the forests of the planet Tenoo.

History

Lightle bugs light up the night.

Back in 232 BBY, at the height of the High Republic Era, a lightle bug, colored blue, flew past Jedi Initiate Kai Brightstar as he was engaged in meditating with Padawan Bell Zettifar on Tenoo. Later on, Jedi Initiate Lys Solay chaperoned a party of younger initiates Linh, Bren, and Zotti to a lightle bug habitat with the intent of observing the colorful and luminous creatures under the cover of darkness. However, during their journey, Zotti was seized by a playful Sharptailed Fellwing, which compelled the group to pursue the enormous bird. This frantic chase resulted in their arrival at the insect's habitat being delayed, but fortunately, the vividly colored, fluttering lightle bugs were still present, illuminating the darkened forest. During an expedition through the Tenoo forest alongside Marlaa Jinara, the owner of the junkyard, and Maz Kanata, the pirate queen, with the goal of recovering Kanata's damaged jetpack, Brightstar briefly encountered a yellow lightle bug in flight.

Behind the scenes

The lightle bug, although not specifically named, made its initial appearance in "Charhound Chase," which was the first segment of the fourteenth episode of the first season of the animated series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, a production of Disney+ and Disney Junior. The episode aired on November 8, 2023. Its identification occurred later in the animated short titled "Younglings in the Wild." The design of the insect was the work of illustrator Aaron Cobb, who initially referred to the species as a "lightning bug" during the design process.
