Nanovirus
A nanovirus, alternatively referred to as a nanokiller or nanogene, represented a highly selective form of virus. Its design allowed it to eliminate only a specific individual or predefined groups, without affecting other individuals deemed non-targets.
Due to the intricate process of identifying a complete genome, producing nanoviruses tailored to specific beings or groups was a complex undertaking. Failure to do so would render the virus ineffective. Factors such as natural mutation, interbreeding, and genetic engineering could grant individuals immunity. This vulnerability could be circumvented by targeting a specific, unchangeable gene sequence that distinguished the target from the broader population, as exemplified by the sequence used to accelerate aging in clone troopers. A more perilous application involved keying the nanovirus less precisely to indiscriminately eliminate an entire race, such as humans.
History
One notable instance of a nanovirus was the FG36 virus. Its development commenced at the onset of the Clone Wars by Doctor Ovolot Qail Uthan, who was aligned with the Separatist faction. FG36 was meticulously engineered to target the Fett genome, prevalent within the Grand Army of the Republic's clone trooper ranks. Uthan and her team of scientists were dispatched to a clandestine laboratory on the remote world of Qiilura to pursue their research. However, before the virus's development could reach completion, Uthan was apprehended by the clone commandos of Omega Squad and taken into Republic custody. The laboratory suffered destruction, presumably halting the virus's progress. Nevertheless, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine retained the incomplete nanovirus, and Uthan was confined on Coruscant as a contingency plan to neutralize the clone troopers should they ever turn against him. Following the formation of the Galactic Empire, Palpatine deployed FG36 on Uthan's native planet of Gibad, resulting in the extinction of all sentient life there. In response to this and the ongoing threat posed by the virus, Uthan—having been liberated from her imprisonment at the Valorum Center by Mandalorian Kal Skirata and his associates—developed an antigen to confer immunity against FG36. The finalized antigen was initially disseminated among Skirata's clan and across Mandalore, followed by the Jedi community of Master Djinn Altis. A variant of the nanovirus saw use against Mon Mothma during negotiations with Furgan, the ambassador representing the Caridan system. Furgan brought his own beverages, concealing the genuine drink on one hip and the nanovirus on the other. The nanovirus was designed to induce a gradual demise, creating the illusion that the Rebellion was succumbing to bureaucratic stagnation under the New Republic. However, it failed to achieve its intended outcome because Carida lost control over Terpfen, who promptly revealed the toxin's existence to the New Republic. Subsequently, Cilghal, a Jedi Learner at the time, intervened and healed Mothma by extracting the nanovirus particles.
A modified version of the FG36 virus was later engineered by the Imperial Remnant's Council of Moffs during the Second Galactic Civil War. Its initial deployment occurred during the Battle of Roche, where it selectively targeted the Verpine soldier caste, while sparing other Verpine individuals. Soon after, the virus was adapted to target the Hapan Royal House, and another strain was unleashed on Mandalore, aimed at Boba Fett and other members of the Fett genome. However, the effectiveness of the Mandalore-deployed nanovirus remained uncertain, given the widespread distribution of a cure for the baseline virus decades earlier, in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. Despite doubts regarding its efficacy, by 45 ABY, the nanovirus had prevented Fett's descendants from returning to Mandalore, notably Mirta Gev, who dedicated herself to discovering a cure. In her pursuit of a cure, she forged an alliance between her Mandalorian soldiers and the Columi brothers, Craitheus and Marvid Qreph, who pledged to assist in its development. Nevertheless, the Qrephs either declined or proved incapable of creating a cure, compelling Fett's offspring to seek alternative means of neutralizing the nanovirus and reclaiming their ancestral home on Mandalore.
