Securing New Allies
Anakin Skywalker, restrained at the Fortress-Home of the Open on Carnelion IV, observes as Kolara consults the other Open youth about their next course of action. One of them suggests that the Scavenger is the sole individual capable of transmitting a signal strong enough to reach beyond their world. He believes that "Mother" Pran and the other adults have deployed the war machines with the intention of eliminating the Scavenger, whom they mistakenly believe to be male.
Kolara counters that the gender of the "Scavenger" is unknown, but she insists on taking action. Another Open youth points out that the adults have taken all the airguns and walkers, deeming it unsafe to traverse the Celadon Sea. Skywalker offers his assistance, prompting Kolara to apologize for his abduction. She identifies Mother Pran as their leader and inquires about Skywalker's well-being. Skywalker assures her he is unharmed and asks about the identity of the Scavenger.
Kolara describes the "Scavenger" as an enigmatic figure residing in the wastelands beneath the Celadon Sea. The kite they discovered on the airgun was one of her numerous gifts, which Kolara describes as artifacts from a bygone era. Kolara explains that the Scavenger provides them with beautiful gifts but struggles to articulate the word for it. Anakin clarifies that the Scavenger's creations are art. Anakin asserts that the Open and Closed desire the Scavenger's death because they serve as a reminder of The World That Was.
A youth with dark skin inquires about the identity of their prisoner. Kolara introduces Anakin as their Skygift. When the dark-skinned youth expresses confusion over Anakin's extensive knowledge of their affairs, Anakin asks the youths how many of them have concealed art from the Scavenger. All of them confess to hiding the Scavenger's art. Anakin then persuades the Open youth to assist him in rescuing the Scavenger from the Open's deadly intentions.
Defending the Scavenger
Inside Sera's fortress museum, Sera informs Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi that she attempted to send a signal offworld using an ancient starship, but it quickly malfunctioned. She asks if Kenobi can repair it, but he admits his lack of expertise. Kenobi suggests that his Padawan Anakin might be able to help. When Kenobi inquires about her proficiency in the Jedi language, Sera explains that she discovered holo-recordings of warriors wielding "swords of light." The recordings also included instructions on how to summon the Jedi for assistance.
Sera reveals to Kenobi that her intention was to lure the Jedi to Carnelion IV in order to eliminate both the Open and the Closed and initiate a new beginning with the children. Kenobi then asks Sera about the color of the lightsaber wielded by the warrior. Sera discloses that it was red. Suddenly, they hear a loud noise indicating that the main doors are being battered. Sera and Kenobi escape to the roof, only to discover that the fortress museum is under siege by the Closed.
The Closed demand that Sera grant them entry, promising to spare her life. Kenobi realizes that Grecker has sent a flare to alert his people. Sera cautions Kenobi against trusting the Closed. Sera urges Kenobi to kill the Closed, but he attempts to reason with their leader, asserting that he has placed Sera under his protection. At that moment, Grecker reappears and orders them to kill Kenobi and set the place ablaze.
Kenobi deflects their blaster bolts with his lightsaber while emphasizing that he is not their enemy. Mother Pran leads the Open Mechs into battle against the Closed. Kenobi also attempts to reason with Grecker, explaining that Sera sought to save their world. Grecker dismisses Kenobi as a fool but is then killed by a laser cannon. Kenobi manages to evade the blast.
Skywalker's Help
Kenobi asks Mother Pran about the whereabouts of his Padawan. Instead, the Open leader attacks him with her Mech. However, Anakin rescues his master with a four-winged flying machine. Skywalker informs his master that he constructed the machine and brought over Kolara and the other young Open.
Kolara introduces herself to Sera, discovering that she is the Scavenger. Anakin assures his master that everything will be alright, but Kenobi remains skeptical. The dark-skinned Open youth asks Sera why she sent her kites. Sera explains that she wanted to initiate a new world. She blames Kenobi for disrupting her plans by bringing the Closed and Open to them. Kenobi insists that they are not killers and leads Anakin down to the starship.
Sera expresses her hope that the adult Open and Closed members will eliminate each other. However, Kolara responds that she does not want her people to die. Kenobi enlists Skywalker's help to repair the ship's damaged communications unit in the museum. Despite Sera's warning, Kolara and the other Open youth depart on their flying machines to join the battle below. As Skywalker prepares to transmit the signal, Kenobi tells him that he intends to change the system.
Republic Intervention
As the conflict between the Closed and Open intensifies, a fleet of Consular-class cruisers enters Carnelion IV's atmosphere, enforcing a ceasefire. While Jedi and a silver 3PO-series protocol droid attend to the wounded, Skywalker asks Kenobi how he managed to persuade the Galactic Republic to dispatch a fleet to Carnelion IV. Kenobi replies that he informed the Republic of the discovery of high concentrations of tibanna gas on the planet.
While Kenobi is uncertain whether this is accurate, he states that the Republic will prohibit any fighting for the duration of their survey. Kenobi hopes that this will bring peace to the world and that the locals can resolve their own issues. When Anakin inquires why the Republic believed him, Kenobi explains that being a Jedi is not solely about power, lightsabers, or the Force, but also about being connected to something greater. He says that being a Jedi grants him strength that he could not possess on his own.
Anakin's Destiny
In a flashback scene at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, Kenobi informs Jedi Master Yoda about Skywalker's intention to suspend his Jedi training and return at a later time. Kenobi blames himself for this perceived failure, telling Yoda that he believes that Skywalker belongs to the Jedi and is too young to make such a decision. Yoda assures Kenobi that Skywalker's doubts are not his fault. He expresses empathy for Skywalker's youth and challenging upbringing, acknowledging that his questions are natural.
Yoda informs Kenobi that they have received a request for Jedi assistance and assigns Kenobi and Skywalker to investigate the matter. Yoda offers to release Skywalker should he choose to leave after the mission. Yoda asks Kenobi if he will still honor his vow to the late Master Qui-Gon Jinn should Skywalker choose to leave. Kenobi vows to complete Anakin's Force training and recalls that Qui-Gon and Yoda recognized the powerful forces surrounding Anakin. They agree that Anakin requires guidance and protection from the dark side.
Kenobi accepts that if Skywalker chooses to leave the Jedi Order, he will also have to leave. Back in the present, Kenobi asks Skywalker if he still wishes to depart from the Jedi Order. Anakin affirms that he will continue his journey as a Jedi. A pleased Kenobi says that he will guide him and hands Anakin his lightsaber.
