Plot summary

A rough landing

A T-6 shuttle, severely damaged by a debris field, makes a crash landing on the war-torn planet of Carnelion IV. Two ejection seats are launched from the shuttle, eventually touching down on the planet's snow-covered mountain peaks. Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker praises the piloting skills of his master, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, suggesting that even Jedi Master Plo Koon would have struggled to navigate the ship through such a dense debris field.

Kenobi concurs, asserting that the debris field is likely one of the two reasons for Carnelion IV's isolation. When Skywalker inquires about the other reason, Kenobi directs his attention to the ruined city below the Celadon Sea, which is also full of destroyed airships. Skywalker then asks about the events that led to this destruction. Kenobi explains that the planet's inhabitants annihilated themselves in a war that occurred many generations prior.

A philosophical discussion

Skywalker questions why the Galactic Republic permitted this to happen, and Kenobi replies that Carnelion IV was not a member world because the Galactic Senate had no vested interests there. Skywalker then asks why the Jedi did not intervene to stop the war. Kenobi clarifies that the Jedi Order operates under the Senate's authority and that there are only ten thousand Jedi available to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. While the Jedi can offer guidance and instruction, Kenobi emphasizes that they are not a military force. He concludes that if a people are determined to destroy themselves, there is little the Jedi can effectively do to prevent it.

Skywalker criticizes the system for the destruction of the planet's inhabitants, and Kenobi concedes that the system is flawed. Skywalker expresses his belief that the system requires change, to which Kenobi replies that he hopes it will. Skywalker asks what their next course of action should be, given their inability to contact the Republic Diplomatic Fleet. Kenobi responds that their mission is to offer assistance, not to request it. He further notes that the distress signal they received specifically requested Jedi intervention and that the Force is the only ally a Jedi truly needs.

Kenobi expresses his curiosity to meet the sender of the distress signal, noting that the broadcast loop began recently but employs archaic language. Skywalker spots an explosion in the sky, realizing that Carnelion IV is not as desolate as it initially appeared. At that moment, a damaged airship flies past them and crashes nearby.

Skywalker expresses his desire to help, but Kenobi reminds him not to forget his lightsaber. Skywalker retorts that he was serious about wanting to leave his lightsaber behind. However, Kenobi insists that he would prefer Skywalker to live long enough to make that decision and urges him to take the lightsaber.

Skywalker's Jedi training

In a flashback, Skywalker is seen sparring with a training droid that has been programmed to emulate Darth Maul. Several Padawans observe the training session, while Jedi Master Mace Windu, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, and Jedi Knight Kenobi watch from a balcony. Palpatine shows an interest in lightsabers.

Windu inquires about the reason for Skywalker's training against a Maul simulation, and Kenobi explains that Anakin had been asking about his battle with the Sith on Naboo, assuming it was out of simple curiosity. Palpatine remarks that he is impressed that a young Skywalker has modified a training droid in an effort to impress his teachers. Skywalker concludes the duel by bisecting the droid.

A human Padawan and a Duros Padawan remark that Skywalker is a slave to his emotions. Overhearing their conversation, Skywalker uses the Force to levitate their lightsabers and point them in their direction. Skywalker demands to know what emotions they are currently experiencing. Kenobi orders him to stop, and Skywalker complies. Skywalker apologizes to the two Padawans, who are visibly intimidated.

Palpatine observes that Skywalker's training is far from complete, and Windu explains that his education has been complicated by the fact that he began his training at an older age. Windu acknowledges that Kenobi has undertaken a challenging task in training Skywalker as his Padawan. Palpatine offers his assistance in guiding Anakin, noting that he was once the boy's age and that he feels a special connection to Skywalker due to his assistance with the Naboo blockade years prior. When Windu points out that Skywalker is Kenobi's responsibility, Palpatine "gently" reminds him that the Jedi are subject to the Senate's jurisdiction and that he is the Chancellor of the Senate. Windu concedes.

Rescuing the locals

Returning to the present, Skywalker retrieves his lightsaber. Through the Force, Skywalker senses a battle occurring in the skies. They follow the signal to a mountain peak, where they witness airships engaged in combat. Skywalker asks what they are supposed to do, to which Kenobi replies that they will do what they can. They focus their attention on a crashing airship and use the Force to pull it toward the edge of a cliff. Two figures on the cliff sense that their airship is inexplicably drifting toward the edge and decide to jump.

They land near Skywalker and Kenobi just as their airship explodes. Anakin introduces himself and Kenobi to a young, green-haired girl named Kolara. However, her mentor, "Mother" Pran, is initially hostile to her rescuers, questioning whether they are Open or Closed while aiming blasters at them. Skywalker responds that they are Jedi responding to a distress call that specifically requested Jedi aid. Kolara and Mother Pran exchange glances before the latter asks, "what in the green hells is a Jedi?"
