Ommin harness

The Ommin harness served as a mechanical spinal support system, designed for use by physically weakened individuals to enhance their mobility and provide necessary support. Historical records indicate its existence in ancient times, with reports suggesting that the Sith ruler Ommin himself utilized such a device. During the eras of the New Republic and the subsequent First Order-Resistance conflict, the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, due to the deterioration of his physical form, employed an Ommin harness within his citadel located on Exegol.

Description

The Ommin harness represented a form of cybernetic spinal enhancement, crafted to aid individuals with physical frailties by augmenting their capacity for movement and providing structural support.

History

The Ommin harness

Historical accounts reveal that an ancient Sith monarch named Ommin relied on an Ommin harness for physical assistance. Following his loss above Endor in 4 ABY, Darth Sidious, the Dark Lord of the Sith and Galactic Emperor, preserved his consciousness by transferring it to a clone body situated on Exegol. However, the sheer magnitude of Sidious' power led to the degradation of this new body, ultimately necessitating the Sith Lord's use of an Ommin harness to sustain his failing physical condition.

In 35 ABY, Sidious was observed wearing the harness while residing within the Sith Citadel on Exegol. During the Battle of Exegol, Sidious absorbed the Force energy from the dyad formed by Ben Solo and Rey, thereby rejuvenating his physical form. Consequently, he detached himself from the Ommin harness, only to be killed by Rey soon after.

Behind the scenes

Ommin's mechanical exoskeleton in the Star Wars Legends continuity

The Ommin harness made a reappearance, though without explicit naming, in the new Star Wars canon, specifically within the 2019 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, penned by Chris Terrio and J.J. Abrams. Its identification was subsequently provided in the novelization that accompanied the film, written by Rae Carson and published in 2020.

Ommin's mechanical exoskeleton was initially presented within the Star Wars Legends continuity in the inaugural edition of the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – The Freedon Nadd Uprising comic book series. This issue was authored by Tom Veitch, illustrated by Tony Akins, and released by Dark Horse Comics on August 2, 1994.
