Pedrin Gaul, a human male, served the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a Rebel pilot, identified by the callsign Red Five. Before his time with the Rebellion, he worked as a transport pilot. His assistance in the escape of individuals targeted by the Galactic Empire from Denon led to his designation as an Imperial traitor. As a Cadet, he met his end during the Battle of Scarif, piloting his T-65B X-wing starfighter for the Alliance. Subsequently, Luke Skywalker adopted the Red Five callsign and achieved the destruction of the Death Star in the Battle of Yavin.
Originating from the planet Denon, Pedrin Gaul's birth predates the Galactic Civil War. On his homeworld, he worked as a transport pilot, moving passengers and goods through the aerial cityscapes of Denon. He remained in this role until he aided fugitives fleeing the Galactic Empire. The Empire labeled Gaul a traitor for his involvement in this exodus, forcing him to leave his home.
Gaul then became a member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, rising to the rank of cadet within the Alliance Fleet, and found himself stationed at the Great Temple on Yavin 4. As a member of Red Squadron, he piloted a T-65B X-wing starfighter and was assigned the callsign Red Five.
Gaul was at one point assigned to Shift Cycle 2 of an X-wing patrol, alongside fellow pilots Cdt. Harb Binli (Red Seven) and Lt. Nozzo Naytaan (Red Nine). Their assignment involved a route from Yavin to Gordian Trace Relays, an observational sweep of the surrounding area, and then a close-range uplink of passive relay recordings after ensuring visual and sensor clearance.

During the Battle of Scarif in 1 BBY, Gaul joined his squadron in supporting Jyn Erso and Rogue One as they attempted to steal the plans for the Empire's planet-destroying superweapon, the Death Star; the rest of the Alliance Fleet also provided support. Gaul died in the conflict, as the Alliance worked to take down the Shield Gate protecting Scarif, which was temporarily blocking Rogue One from sending the Death Star plans to the Alliance Fleet. Ultimately, the plans were transmitted and delivered to Princess Leia Organa.
Admiral Raddus reportedly heard Gaul's distressed cry over the starfighter's comms at the moment of his passing.

Gaul's passing resulted in the Red Five callsign becoming available. Shortly after the Battle of Scarif, Luke Skywalker, an aspiring Jedi, assisted Princess Leia in bringing the stolen plans to Yavin 4. The Alliance discovered a vulnerability in the battle station, designed by Galen Erso, which led to the Battle of Yavin to destroy the Death Star. Skywalker, flying as Red Five, fired the shot that destroyed the Death Star, thus honoring the sacrifice of Pedrin Gaul and all those who perished on Scarif.
Pedrin Gaul was conceived for the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His detailed background was expanded upon in the reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, by Lucasfilm Story Group creative executive Pablo Hidalgo. David Forman, a stunt performer, played him.
