Nozzo Naytaan

Serving during the Galactic Civil War as a lieutenant and Rebel pilot, male human Nozzo Naytaan fought for the Rebellion. As a member of Red Squadron, he participated in the Battle of Scarif under the callsign Red Nine. Naytaan, who hailed from Corellia, maintained a friendly rivalry with fellow Rebel pilot Lieutenant Attico Wred, who flew as Green Four with Green Squadron. Tragically, Naytaan died in the Battle of Yavin just a few days after the Battle of Scarif.

Naytaan worked as a test pilot for the Corellian Engineering Corporation when it underwent Imperialization. Upon discovering that he was slated to test TIE fighters for the Galactic Empire, Naytaan defected and joined the Rebel Alliance.

Sometime before 0 BBY, Naytaan was assigned to Shift Cycle 2 of an X-wing patrol mission. He was to be accompanied by fellow pilots Cdt. Harb Binli (Red Seven) and Pedrin Gaul (Red Five). The mission parameters dictated that they travel from Yavin to Gordian Trace Relays, conduct a spatial flyby, and once visual and sensor confirmation was achieved, perform a close uplink of passive relay recordings.

Behind the scenes

Nozzo Naytaan's flight helmet was similar to Attico Wred's helmet

The voice of Naytaan can be heard in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. He delivers the lines "Red Nine standing by" and "It's a hit!" over his X-wing's comm system; however, his second line wasn't officially linked to his character until 2008. His designation as Red Nine during the Battle of Scarif was confirmed in Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide. In Star Wars: Rogue One, Frank Stone portrays Nozzo Naytaan. The short story "Duty Roster" later affirmed Nozzo's participation in the Battle of Yavin, bringing it back into canon.

Within Legends continuity, Naytaan's birthplace was stated as Regellia. However, in canon, Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide retconned his homeworld to Corellia.

The design of Naytaan's helmet bears a resemblance to that of Attico Wred's helmet in the film. Both helmets share a design similar to Luke Skywalker's blast shield helmet in A New Hope and Dorovio Bold's helmet in Return of the Jedi, as well as Darnell Reggs' helmet from the Legends video game Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire.
