Plot to assassinate Jabba Desilijic Tiure
In 4 ABY, Jabba Desilijic Tiure became the target of an assassination plot, orchestrated by the Twi'lek named Silvan Kaan. This scheme unfolded swiftly, commencing less than a week following the Twi'lek's arrival at Jabba's Palace on the planet of Tatooine. Kaan initiated his plan by approaching Eightyem, Jabba's translator droid, proposing freedom from Jabba's servitude in exchange for completing three tasks. The initial task involved poisoning Tessek, the Quarren who served as the Hutt's accountant. This allowed Kaan to seize Tessek's position, granting him access to financial records. Kaan then utilized this information to sow discord among Jabba's court, fueling jealousies and intensifying rivalries. Furthermore, access to these records revealed the assignments and favor status of individuals within the palace, enabling Kaan to identify those in Jabba's good graces and those who were not. Subsequently, he began manipulating the financial records, subtly shifting small amounts of credits to create the perception of unequal distribution of Jabba's generosity. Continuing his machinations, Kaan became aware of a conflict brewing between the Ithorian named Charn Roondha and the Gran known as Ree-Yees. Kaan discovered that Yees harbored ambitions to climb the ranks of Jabba's criminal empire, seeking to transition from his role as caretaker of Jabba's frog-dog, Buboicullaar, to assuming Roondha's position as a collector of taxes and protection money from various worlds in the Outer Rim Territories. To capitalize on this rivalry, Kaan enlisted Eightyem's assistance for his second favor, tasking the droid with acting as a translator as the Twi'lek shared his discoveries about Yees with Roondha. Kaan's scheme proved successful, prompting the Ithorian to confront the Gran. As Roondha held Yees in a chokehold, Kaan skillfully manipulated Jabba into intervening, preventing Roondha from killing Yees. He argued that allowing such an act within his throne room would project an image of weakness. The Hutt promptly ordered Yees' life to be spared, and Roondha, though displeased, reluctantly complied, stating his respect for the decision. Afterward, Roondha questioned the perceived loss of Jabba's trust, to which Kaan instructed Eightyem to convey that Roondha's credit acquisitions had diminished, a claim Roondha disputed. Kaan further escalated the situation by directing the droid to inform Roondha of a rumor suggesting Jabba intended to transfer Roondha's responsibilities on Mandalore to Yees. Growing increasingly desperate, the Ithorian inquired about potential preventative measures. Kaan proposed that action could be taken if Jabba were no longer a factor, prompting Roondha to question the consequences of removing Jabba from his throne. The Twi'lek then asserted that whoever possessed the audacity to execute such a bold move would command fear and respect, but would require an ally skilled in diplomacy to navigate the ensuing challenges with the rest of the Hutts.
Following this exchange, Eightyem and Kaan convened outside the palace to devise a strategy for Roondha to eliminate Jabba without facing immediate repercussions. Eightyem noted Kaan's previous assertion that the Ithorian would require a blaster, a sentiment the Twi'lek affirmed. He then pointed out that only Jabba's guards and favored individuals were permitted to carry weapons within the palace, a privilege Roondha did not possess. Kaan proposed that someone within the Hutt's inner circle, such as his translator, referring to Eightyem, would need to access the armory and retrieve the weapon for Roondha. Eightyem then understood that this constituted the third favor Kaan had mentioned earlier, and proceeded to fulfill it. He entered the armory and acquired a WESTAR-35 blaster pistol. Upon exiting the armory, the bounty hunter Bane Malar, who had been observing, approached the droid and requested a conversation. The hunter accused the droid of engaging in suspicious activities with Kaan, though he lacked specific knowledge of their plot, but he intended to uncover the truth. Eightyem returned to Kaan and relayed Malar's accusations. Kaan dismissed the hunter's suspicions, reminding the droid that he was the only one who had offered him freedom from Jabba, and threatened that the droid would not be taken seriously over Kaan if he tried to curry favor with Jabba. Eightyem knew the Twi'lek was right, and continued. Kaan provided the blaster to Roondha, who subsequently attempted to assassinate Jabba. The attempt failed due to Malar's intervention, and when Bib Fortuna, Jabba's majordomo, noted that the Ithorian would have required an accomplice to smuggle the weapon inside, as he lacked authorization, Kaan attempted to solicit a fourth favor from Eightyem. The droid reminded him that he had only requested three, but the Twi'lek argued that it would benefit both of them equally.
Later, Roondha was brought before Jabba to answer for his assassination attempt. Jabba promised Roondha a swift death in exchange for revealing the identity of his blaster supplier. When Roondha identified Kaan, Eightyem deliberately mistranslated his words to Jabba, claiming that the Ithorian would rather endure a gruesome death than betray his accomplice. Roondha then implicated the droid, but Eightyem again mistranslated, this time stating that he had said something unkind about Jabba's mother. Consequently, Roondha was taken to the Great Pit of Carkoon and fed to the sarlacc. After the Ithorian was consumed by the sarlacc, Malar approached Kaan and remarked that it would be unfortunate if someone were to join Roondha in the sarlacc, where he would be digested over a thousand years. Upon the party's return to the palace, Kaan fulfilled his promise to grant Eightyem freedom by removing his restraining bolt. However, they were intercepted by Malar, who revealed a hologram depicting Eightyem handing the blaster to Roondha. Kaan believed that this only implicated the droid, and after he was brought before Jabba, the Hutt informed him that Eightyem had confessed to Kaan's deceit. With Kaan exposed, he was seized by guards to be devoured by the sarlacc. Eightyem thanked Jabba for recognizing Kaan's deceptions and stated that he had been threatened with horrors by the Twi'lek. When Jabba inquired about the nature of these horrors, Malar presented the Hutt with the removed restraining bolt. Jabba asked Eightyem if the horrors included the removal of his restraining bolt, to which the droid attempted to explain. The Hutt dismissed Eightyem's explanation, stating that he would not be sent to the sarlacc as it was incapable of consuming droids, and questioned what alternative fate awaited him. Eightyem was disintegrated.
