Rescue of Antan Azzameen

The younger generation of the Azzameen family launched a rescue operation to free their uncle, Antan Azzameen, after he was taken prisoner by the forces of the Galactic Empire.

Not long after the Battle of Hoth during the Galactic Civil War, Tomaas Azzameen endeavored to supply the Rebellion with bacta. However, he met his death, along with his eldest son Galin, during an attack on the XQ2 Platform Hospital where he was making a delivery. The Empire, having uncovered Tomaas Azzameen's treason, issued arrest warrants for the entire family and confiscated all assets belonging to the family and their business, Twin Suns Transport Services. Antan, Tomaas Azzameen's brother, acted swiftly to secure as much of the family's wealth as possible before it could be seized, but he was captured in the process.

Following the remaining Azzameens' escape from Imperial detention, the eldest surviving brother, Emon Azzameen, learned that his uncle Antan had been handed over to the Viraxo, the Azzameens' rival family. Emon Azzameen, accompanied by his youngest sibling Ace, journeyed to a Viraxo facility to liberate their uncle. After battling their way through planetary fighters on their approach and TIE Series fighters on their departure, the brothers successfully freed him.

Prelude

The Empire raids the platform Hospital.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth, amidst the ongoing Galactic Civil War, the Rebellion found itself in dire need of supplies. Tomaas Azzameen, a co-founder of the Twin Suns Transport Services company, chose to support the Rebellion during this critical time by providing shipments of the restorative liquid bacta. During one such delivery to the Rebel XQ2 Platform Hospital, the Empire launched an attack with the intention of seizing the platform. Consequently, Tomaas Azzameen and his eldest son Galin were presumed dead, and the entire Azzameen family was accused of treason by the Empire. Warrants were issued for the arrest of all family members, and all assets belonging to the family and their company were confiscated.

Antan, Tomaas Azzameen's brother and now the only surviving elder of the family, raced against time to safeguard any remaining assets. To this end, he and his eldest nephew Emon Azzameen traveled to an Azzameen cargo facility, while his niece and youngest nephew Aeron and Ace Azzameen went to Twin Suns Station to retrieve family heirlooms and a shipment of warheads. The younger Azzameens managed to escape an assault by the Empire and their rival family, the Viraxo, who were working closely with the Empire to seize Azzameen assets. Upon reuniting at Azzameen Station, Emon Azzameen informed his siblings that their uncle Antan had been captured by the Empire.

The Azzameen siblings departed the station before the Empire could apprehend them, seeking refuge with the Alliance Fleet. There, Ace Azzameen joined the Rebellion as a starfighter pilot, while his brother and sister continued to operate independently against the Empire and the Viraxo family. Following Ace Azzameen's combat trials and first full mission as an Alliance pilot, his brother sent word to Ace's new base on the Calamari cruiser Defiance, revealing that an Azzameen-affiliated mole within the Viraxo ranks had informed Emon that their uncle Antan was being held at a Viraxo platform. The mole had arranged for Antan Azzameen to be held in a cell near the station's highest airlock. The younger Azzameens immediately began planning their uncle's rescue.

The mission

Ace Azzameen left the Alliance Fleet aboard the YT-2000 light freighter Otana, with the family's Droid MK-09 manning the gunner position. Ace and Emkay then traveled through hyperspace to meet with Emon Azzameen in the Firespray-class Andrasta. From their rendezvous point, the Azzameen transports jumped to the Viraxo Industries platform, intending to slip through the surrounding traffic and dock with minimal disruption.

Unfortunately for the Azzameens, their attempt at stealth was quickly foiled. A squadron of Planetary Defender starfighters moved to intercept the Azzameens, but the two transports managed to evade them. The Otana docked with the platform, and MK-09 retrieved Antan Azzameen while Emon continued to engage the station's starfighter screen and Ace fired defensive shots at them from the upper turret of his docked transport.

The Condemnation arrives at the Viraxo platform.

By the time Antan Azzameen had been brought aboard the Otana, Imperial forces had arrived to aid their Viraxo allies. The Victory I-class Star Destroyer Condemnation emerged from hyperspace three kilometers from the platform and launched TIE/LN starfighters and TIE/IN interceptors. Emon Azzameen suggested that his Andrasta could distract the TIEs while the Otana made a run for the jump point, and then the ships could reunite at the original rendezvous point. This plan proved successful, although a few TIEs caught up with the Otana and were destroyed by MK-09's skillful shooting.

Back at the rendezvous point, the Otana and Andrasta docked with each other, and Antan Azzameen was transferred from Ace's ship to Emon's so the elder brother could escort their uncle to safety while the youngest Azzameen returned to the Alliance.

Aftermath

Ace Azzameen returned safely to the Defiance, where he was promoted from cadet to flight officer and given a new mission: to reconnoiter the task force commanded by the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Corrupter, the very ship that had captured Azzameen's home.

Antan Azzameen recovered from his imprisonment and sent Ace a gift of his prized Jar'Kai dueling sabers. He and the other Azzameens continued their clandestine war against the Viraxo, which culminated in a failed attempt to assassinate Viraxo patriarch K'Armyn Viraxo. Later, Antan would betray his family to the Empire to ensure his own survival.

Behind the scenes

The rescue of Antan Azzameen is depicted solely in the personal computer game Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance, which was created for LucasArts by Totally Games and released on February 28, 1999, and its official Prima Games strategy guide, which was released on May 3 of the same year. X-Wing Alliance was classified within the continuity now known as "Legends" along with the majority of other Star Wars materials produced before April 25, 2014.

The official strategy guide presents the mission as a narrative told from the perspective of the Azzameen family's droid, MK-09. Although the game allows for different strategies, this article assumes the guide's narrative to be accurate. While the mission includes bonus objectives such as destroying the Viraxo Industries platform and even the Star Destroyer Condemnation, these possibilities are not included in this article's summary of the mission. As the destroyer and station only appear in this mission and are not referenced elsewhere in Legends continuity, which has since been discontinued, it is possible they could have been destroyed, but the strategy guide states that the Azzameens fled without doing so.

The strategy guide also contradicts the game in a more explicit manner: the strategy guide states that a mole was responsible for both providing Antan Azzameen's location and moving him close to the top airlock, while the in-game briefing states that Antan Azzameen's location was discovered through Aeron Azzameen's slicing of Viraxo computer systems, and the mole only arranged to simplify Antan's removal from the station. The guide also suggests the plan to split up before jumping back to the rendezvous was formulated spontaneously, while the game includes the plan as part of the mission briefing. In both cases, this article assumes the newer narrative source takes precedence over the older game level.
