The RZ-1T, alternatively referred to as the RZ-1T A-wing, served as a trainer starship variant of the A-wing. It was employed by the burgeoning rebellion against the Galactic Empire, and subsequently by the Rebel Alliance, for the purpose of instructing prospective rebel pilots. This vessel, engineered during the rebellion's formative period, shared several traits with the standard RZ-1, including its wedge-shaped fuselage, a pair of laser cannons, sublight engines, and an integrated hyperdrive system. Uniquely, due to its training function, the RZ-1T incorporated a supplementary seat in the rear of the cockpit for an instructor.
In 2 BBY, one RZ-1T was stationed at the secret base of Phoenix Cell and utilized for the training of the rebel cell's new recruits. During this period, Padawan Ezra Bridger and Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus piloted the RZ-1T to Vizsla Keep 09 to effect the rescue of their friends from Maul, the former Sith Lord. Later, Bridger commandeered the trainer to journey, without permission, to the desert planet of Tatooine to communicate a warning about Maul to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Upon landing, however, Bridger and C1-10P, who had secretly boarded the craft, were attacked by the indigenous Tusken Raiders. The RZ-1T was destroyed after sustaining six hits from the Raiders' blaster rifles, resulting in an explosion.
By 0 ABY, a deteriorated RZ-1T was in the hands of the Dreamers, a radical extremist rebel faction emerging from the remnants of Saw Gerrera's Partisans. This trainer was stored within a collection of stolen spacecraft at the cell's encampment located on the planet Jeosyn. During a mission executed by the Inferno Squad of the Empire to penetrate and assimilate into the rebel group, Agent Gideon Hask frequently flew the RZ-1T alongside Staven, the leader of the Dreamers.

The RZ-1T model of starship initially surfaced, though only identified as a "trainer," in "The Holocrons of Fate," which is the second episode of the third season of the canon animated series Star Wars Rebels. Its release date was October 1, 2016. It was later formally identified as an RZ-1T within its Databank entry on StarWars.com.
The very first instance of a two-seater A-Wing appeared in the Star Wars Legends animated series Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO, specifically in the episode titled "The Revenge of Kybo Ren." Although later Legends materials retroactively designated the ship as a variant of the R-22 Spearhead starfighter, production documents from the show's creation simply referred to it as a "Two Seater A-Wing."
