The A-wing starfighter, also known simply as the A-wing, was a type of starfighter. The Alliance to Restore the Republic and the New Republic both utilized the RZ-1 A-wing interceptor during the Galactic Civil War and the earlier Early rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Roughly three decades later, its successor, the RZ-2 A-wing interceptor, saw action with the Resistance throughout the First Order-Resistance War.
A-wings participated in combat as far back as 18 BBY. At least eight of these fighters were part of Bail Organa's forces, which deployed them to aid an uprising on the planet of Raada. The Raada population was evacuated following the uprising, and Ahsoka Tano subsequently joined the rebellion as a Fulcrum agent.
In 4 BBY, Darth Vader initiated an attack on Phoenix Squadron, which devastated Phoenix Squadron's A-wing complement. Six of the eight deployed fighters were destroyed by the Sith Lord's weaponry. Vader also destroyed the Phoenix Cell's flagship, the Phoenix Home, compelling the rebel fleet to retreat into hyperspace.
A minimum of five A-wings were involved in a rebel operation to overcome the Blockade of Ibaar. The rebels were successful in breaking the blockade and delivering supplies to the Ibaar rebel network. One A-wing was lost during the battle.
In 3 BBY, Imperial vessels engaged Phoenix Squadron in a space battle in deep space. The rebels were victorious, but the A-wing flown by Phoenix Three was shot down by TIE fighters.
During the Battle of Garel, five A-wings from Phoenix Squadron saw action; the Imperial Military forced the cell to abandon its planetary hideouts. Only one Taylander shuttle was destroyed; no A-wings were lost.
A dogfight over Concord Dawn saw five A-wings from Phoenix Squadron engage Skull Squadron, a Mandalorian unit of Fang fighters. The Mandalorian Protectors' victory resulted in the loss of two A-wings and forced the remaining fighters to retreat to the fleet.

Two A-wings from Phoenix Squadron were part of a mission to Ryloth, where they were ordered to attack a TIE/sa bomber. The bomber was being operated by the rebels, who intended to use it to board and seize an Imperial Quasar Fire-class cruiser carrier. The Imperial crew fell for the deception, allowing the shuttle into the carrier's hangar. The A-wings jumped to hyperspace when the Imperials opened fire. The mission concluded with the carrier's hijacking and the destruction of an Arquitens-class light cruiser.
Later, two A-wings were launched to defend against an attack on Phoenix Squadron. The attack was a tactical victory for the Empire, but a strategic victory for the rebellion, as the Phoenix Cell was able to relocate to Chopper Base soon after. No A-wings were confirmed destroyed in the engagement.
In 2 BBY, four A-wings from Phoenix Squadron fought Imperial forces after the Spectres successfully completed a mission to Reklam Station. The rebels captured five Y-wing starfighters and destroyed Reklam Station, without losing any A-wings.
All six A-wings of Green Squadron were lost in a massacre near Teralov. The particularly brutal nature of this battle influenced Imperial cadets Wedge Antilles and Derek Klivian to defect and join the rebellion.

Two A-wings from Phoenix Squadron participated in a skirmish over Mykapo. Following this, Iron Squadron successfully evacuated the system and joined the rebellion.
Ezra Bridger and C1-10P "Chopper" used an RZ-1T trainer A-wing for an unauthorized mission to Tatooine to recruit former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to the Alliance to Restore the Republic. While the mission failed to recruit Kenobi, who felt obligated to remain on Tatooine to protect Luke Skywalker, it did lead to the death of the former Sith Lord Maul. The A-wing was destroyed by Tusken Raiders, forcing the rebels to return to Chopper Base in Maul's old Kom'rk-class fighter/transport Nightbrother.

Phoenix Squadron's A-wings were heavily involved in the Battle of Atollon, a significant Imperial victory. The destruction of Chopper Base, the postponement of the planned attack on Lothal, and the relocation of the remaining Phoenix Cell to Yavin 4 followed. All but four of the rebel A-wings were destroyed during the battle.
After the small-scale rebellion did not succeed in toppling the Empire, the Alliance to Restore the Republic escalated the conflict into open warfare with the Battle of Scarif. This battle, which occurred in 0 BBY, marked the start of the five-year Galactic Civil War. Rebel A-wings in service at this time were often modified by removing shields and heavy weapons in exchange for enhanced speed and agility. In 0 ABY, Rebel A-wings supported Saponza's Gang during the Battle for Tatooine, which resulted in the planet's liberation from Imperial control.
A-wing fighters, including Shara Bey's A-wing, participated in the battle at Rendezvous Point Delta-Three following the Battle of Hoth. Bey and L'ulo L'ampar, who piloted his own A-wing, later joined Starlight Squadron during Operation Starlight. Seven A-wings took part in the Unity Day attack. During the aerial assault on Coruscant, three A-wings accompanied the Millennium Falcon, but all were lost. However, Nien Nunb, the pilot of the last A-wing, successfully ejected and joined the Falcon's crew.

A-wings were among the units that participated in the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, flying with Blade, Riot, Green, and Red squadrons. The battle was a major win for the Rebellion, resulting in the death of Galactic Emperor Darth Sidious and the destruction of the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station.
Seventeen days after Endor, A-wings from Green Squadron participated in the Battle of Cawa City on Sterdic IV. The battle ended in a Rebel victory and the city's liberation. A-wings were deployed in the Attack on Fondor, a devastating Rebel defeat that resulted in the loss of many starfighters. Imperial forces secured climate disruption arrays needed for Operation: Cinder as a result of the battle. A few months after the Battle of Endor, New Republic A-wings were sent to support a rebellion on Akiva. The rebellion led to the capture of high-ranking Imperial officers, the rescue of Captain Wedge Antilles, and the liberation of Akiva. Akiva soon became the first world in the Outer Rim Territories to join the New Republic.

In 5 ABY, at least one A-wing participated in the Battle of Fondor Shipyards, serving in Shepherd Squadron. The New Republic won the battle. A-wings fought with Phoenix and Shepherd Squadrons in the Battle of Jakku, the final conflict of the Galactic Civil War.
In 34 ABY, Black Squadron undertook a mission to Ovanis to locate Lor San Tekka and ask for his help finding Luke Skywalker. One A-wing was involved in the mission, which became a dogfight between Black Squadron and First Order forces. The battle ended in a draw, with some TIEs destroyed but no Black Squadron losses.
L'ulo L'ampar, an A-wing pilot, was killed when his fighter was destroyed in a three-way battle with the Ranc Gang and the First Order battle over a desert planet.
RZ-2 A-wing interceptors of the Resistance saw action at the Battle of Mamkoda. The Resistance won the battle, and MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 bombers destroyed a pirate spaceport. A similar battle later took place at Sheh Soahi.

During the evacuation of D'Qar, RZ-2 A-wings provided escort for Resistance bombers tasked with destroying the Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought Fulminatrix. The Dreadnought was destroyed, but the bombing fleet and an A-wing piloted by Zizi Tlo were lost.
The First Order destroyed all of the Resistance's starfighters in a Battle of Oetchi that occurred right after the fleet exited hyperspace in the Oetchi system.
The A-wing series of starfighters made its debut in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, during the Battle of Endor's climax.
