Sith holocrons functioned as information repositories utilized by the Sith, as devices. While their purpose mirrored that of Jedi holocrons, their typical form involved pyramids or tetrahedrons, contrasting with the cuboid shape of Jedi holocrons. Access was restricted to individuals proficient in wielding the dark side of the Force. The Jedi Order regarded them as some of the most perilous artifacts present within the galaxy. During the early stages of the rebellion against the Galactic Empire, Ezra Bridger unearthed a Sith holocron within the Sith temple situated on Malachor, retaining possession of it following the events there.
Millennia prior to the Battle of Yavin, a Sith temple was erected on Malachor, accompanied by a Sith holocron capable of powering the temple. This temple served as an ancient superweapon. However, the Jedi soon discovered its existence, initiating an attack on the temple. During the ensuing battle, the temple was activated, causing petrification of everything in its vicinity, thus forming a substantial dome enveloping the structure. Before this event, the knowledge of the Sith was concealed within the holocron, which was stored beneath the temple in a chamber accessible only through doors opened by employing the dark side of the Force, possibly to prevent its acquisition by the Jedi. Adhering to Sith teachings, passage through these doors necessitated the cooperation of two Force-users.
During one of his initial visits to Moraband, Darth Sidious came across a sizable Sith holocron. Subsequently, he arranged for its relocation to Coruscant, where it became integrated into his collection of Sith artifacts, initially concealed within an abandoned tower and later within the Grand Republic Medical Facility.
A Sith holocron was observed in Dryden Vos's study during 10 BBY.
During the age of the Galactic Empire, Master Yoda informed Padawan Ezra Bridger about the existence of Malachor, leading him to travel there alongside Ahsoka Tano, Kanan Jarrus, and their droid Chopper.
Upon arriving on the planet, it became apparent that the Empire's Inquisitors were interested in Malachor and its secrets, as well as the former Sith Lord, Maul, who had been marooned on Malachor for years. Separated from his companions, Ezra encountered Maul. Together, they proceeded to extract the concealed holocron from the core of the Sith temple. However, Ezra and Maul soon encountered the Inquisitors and joined forces with Ahsoka and Kanan.

Working together, they successfully defeated the Inquisitors, after which Maul unveiled his true objective: to activate the temple, take Ezra as his apprentice, and eliminate all his adversaries. However, Kanan, who had been blinded by Maul's lightsaber moments before, defeated him. Maul managed to survive, commandeering one of the Inquisitors' TIE Advanced prototype fighters and fleeing Malachor.
While Ezra was on the temple, he placed the holocron within an obelisk at the summit, and he was greeted by a female voice who revealed that the temple was a superweapon. Ezra realized that Maul had deceived them, but as Ezra attempted to warn Ahsoka and Kanan, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, aboard his TIE Advanced, slowly descended from above. Surprised, Vader wondered how the apprentice was able to activate the temple. Dismissing Ezra, the Sith Lord stated that all that mattered now was that the power within would soon serve the Emperor.
After shattering Ezra Bridger's lightsaber and preparing to execute the boy, Darth Vader was stopped by his former Padawan, Ahsoka. The two eventually engaged in a duel as Ezra tried to retrieve the holocron from the temple, but was unable to do so as another person was required. He eventually was found by Kanan, who was blinded by Maul. The two succeeded in taking back the holocron but because of this, the temple started to collapse. As the two Jedi headed back to the Phantom, they were intercepted by Vader. However, Ahsoka ran towards the Sith Lord from behind, knocking him down and slicing his mask. Kanan and Ezra made their way to the Phantom as Ahsoka held Vader off. While they fought, the temple collapsed over the dueling opponents.
A significant surge of energy emanated from the temple as the Phantom departed the planet. Now in Ezra's possession, the holocron was unlocked through the use of the dark side.
Over the course of several months, the holocron gradually corrupted Ezra Bridger, enticing him toward the dark side and amplifying his strength against the Galactic Empire. Concerned about the holocron's influence on Bridger, his now-blinded master, Kanan Jarrus, confiscated it. He subsequently presented it as a "gift" to Bendu, a Force-sensitive being who claimed to embody the center of the Force, after Bendu aided him in perceiving through the Force despite his physical blindness.
At a later time, Maul captured and held the crew of the Ghost hostage. Maul demanded that Ezra and Kanan return the Sith holocron to him. After returning to Atollon and recovering the holocron from the Bendu, both Jedi met with Maul at an outpost. While Ezra went with Maul's droids to see his friends, Kanan went along with Maul, who tried to kill him by ejecting him into space through an airlock. The former Sith Lord, believing Kanan to be dead, told Ezra that if they used the Sith holocron with Jarrus' Jedi holocron they could gain knowledge about what they sought. Ezra wanted to know how they could destroy the Sith while Maul said that he was seeking hope. As they opened both the holocrons together, they saw a planet's twin stars and the continued survival of "him." Before they could learn more, Kanan, who had survived, stopped Ezra. On stopping the process both the holocrons were fragmented.
