Special Edition Limited

The sixth major expansion for the Star Wars Customizable Card Game (CCG), a game of cards rooted in the Star Wars universe, was the Special Edition Limited set. Released in November 1998, it featured a total of 324 cards, split evenly with 162 for the Dark Side and 162 for the Light Side. The set's composition included 120 rare cards, 80 uncommon cards, 80 common cards, and 44 fixed cards (exclusively found in Starter decks). Notably, it stands as the only set in the Star Wars Customizable Card Game to encompass all three films from the original trilogy, and it uniquely incorporated elements and visuals from the Special Edition re-releases. This expansion also brought objectives into the game, which changed gameplay mechanics (and were the first double-sided cards).

Sold in both 9-card expansion packs and 30-pack expansion boxes, each pack contained a distribution of one rare card, three uncommon cards, and five common cards. Starter decks were also available for purchase. Each starter deck had 60 cards, a revised rulebook, and a glossary. These decks also had fixed cards (the only fixed cards in the Star Wars CCG that weren't considered premium cards). The B-wing fighter made its debut within these fixed cards. Starter decks were packaged in display boxes containing 12 decks. Due to the significant influx of new cards and gameplay elements, this set is widely regarded as a pivotal release in the Star Wars CCG. An unlimited print run of this set never occurred.

Continuity

This expansive set provided the initial naming for numerous characters spanning all three movies of the original trilogy, including those featured in the Special Editions. Crucially, this set identified the pilots engaged in the Battle of Yavin: Theron Nett, Lieutenant Naytaan Lepira, Hol Okand, Bren Quersey, Elyhek Rue and Ryle Torsyn. It also introduced names for other characters, like henchmen appearing in the restored Jabba the Hutt scene from the Special Edition of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (Boelo and Gela Yeens), and gave the background character portrayed by artist Ralph McQuarrie in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back the name General McQuarrie. Through modified images of models and maquettes depicting unused concepts from the production of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, the set introduced several aliens and alien species into canon: Bron Burs, Niado Duegad, Neb Dulo, Brangus Glee, Soth Petikkin, the Lobel, and the Makurth.

Inconsistencies

A mistake occurred on the Lieutenant Naytaan card, identified as Red Nine during the Battle of Yavin, where the image used actually depicted John D. Branon. Subsequent publications corrected this error, but the unseen character of Naytaan persisted in the Legends continuity. The new canon version of Naytaan later made an appearance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
