Star Wars: Poe Dameron

Star Wars: Poe Dameron is a series of comic book issues published by Marvel Comics. The writing is credited to Charles Soule, while the art is credited to Phil Noto. It follows the story of Poe Dameron, a pilot in the Resistance. The narrative explores events that happened before the movie Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, as well as events that occurred before and after the movie Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. The astromech droid BB-8 is also a prominent figure, and the series revolves around the Resistance's fight against the First Order. The public announcement of the series was made on January 14, 2016, leading up to Marvel's regular solicitations in April 2016. The initial issue was released on April 6, 2016, and the series concluded with its thirty-first issue on September 26, 2018.

Development

The announcement for Star Wars: Poe Dameron occurred on January 14, 2016, through an exclusive report by USA Today. It was revealed as an ongoing series with Charles Soule as the writer and Phil Noto as the artist. The comic book, which is set before the events of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, is centered around the character Poe Dameron during the time leading up to his mission to Jakku, as depicted in The Force Awakens. Soule mentioned that, due to Dameron's popularity as one of the standout characters from the film, Marvel Comics was in a good position to tell a story about a character that resonated with people so well. However, this also placed pressure on him and Noto to ensure that the story they delivered lived up to the fans' expectations.

The plot would delve into Dameron's reputation as the top pilot within the Resistance, as he serves under the leadership of General Leia Organa. His personality would be further developed, and the comic would explore both new and familiar locations, introducing both returning legacy characters and new ones, including BB-8. Soule found writing Dameron to be an intriguing challenge, particularly since he had also worked on the comic miniseries Star Wars: Lando. In contrast to Lando Calrissian, whom Soule had known for three decades, Dameron was a relatively new character that he had only considered for a few months. Consequently, writing about Dameron was not "as instinctive in some ways as writing a story about" Calrissian. Soule compared the comic to a Mission: Impossible film that focuses on Dameron.

Noto's artistic approach to the series involved studying X-wing reference materials to develop the space battles, as well as watching films featuring Oscar Isaac, the actor who portrays Dameron. By examining Isaac's performances in The Force Awakens and other movies, Noto aimed to better "act that part out" in his mind while drawing. He would constantly ask himself, "How would Oscar Isaac behave as Poe Dameron in this situation?"

As the comic's story unfolds, Dameron leads a squadron with a critical objective and must face the threat posed by the First Order, in addition to a new adversary determined to stop Dameron and locate the missing Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Soule believed that the new era presented in The Force Awakens provided an opportunity for fresh archetypes, allowing him to create a villain who "is going to feel fresh and cool." Soule did not foresee many flashback scenes, such as those depicting Dameron's childhood with his parents, Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, who were introduced in the comic miniseries Star Wars: Shattered Empire. Instead, Soule's objective was to delve into the story of Poe Dameron, who grew up with the legacy of the Rebel Alliance and the Old Republic, through Dameron's actions in various situations and his interactions with other characters.

Following his work on issue 7, Angel Unzueta took over as the series artist starting with issue 14. Phil Noto remained responsible for the cover art for each issue of the series. The initial plan was for the series to conclude with the 25th issue, marking the end of the Legend Found story arc. However, it was extended due to high sales and strong support from readers.
