Those who navigate and explore are a unique group—they forge the paths that others will eventually follow. They require strength, motivation, and optimism, along with a considerable amount of fearlessness. However, nowhere does it state that they must possess good fortune. Gav and Jori Daragon earn their living by mapping hyperspace routes and selling this information to traders and transporters. When a starswarm cluster damages their vessel, they are forced to land on Cinnagar, becoming impoverished and disheartened. They then persuade Aarrba the Hutt, who is relatively agreeable, to perform the necessary repairs.
During an expedition to chart new hyperspace routes, Gav and Jori Daragon's ship, the Starbreaker 12, sustains damage. Consequently, they bring it to Aarrba the Hutt's repair facility located on Koros Major. He carries out the repairs, but decides to impound the ship until the repair costs are fully settled. Having faced a string of unfortunate events, Gav and Jori have been compelled to liquidate their family residence to cover the expenses of repairing their starship.
Concurrently, a drone ship belonging to Merchant Lord Ssk Kahorr crashes into the red supergiant star Primus Goluud while utilizing one of the Daragons' established routes. Enraged, Kahorr assigns his subordinate Tk'lokk the task of identifying the individual who authorized that route into the Goluud corridor, with the intention of seeking compensation.
While aimlessly wandering through the streets of Cinnagar, a disheveled Jori observes Empress Teta, along with Jedi Knights Odan-Urr and Memit Nadill, as they travel in a carriage. Memit is convinced that restoring the carbonite mines to operational status will contribute to making the Koros system one of the wealthiest within the galaxy. Odan-Urr addresses the assembled crowd, informing them of his arrival to assist in securing the Empress' new alliance for the benefit of the Republic. Jori expresses her wish that she and her brother had become Jedi, given their Force-sensitivity, but acknowledges their lack of patience for the demanding training involved.
At Aarrba's Repair and Salvage, Gav inquires with Aarrba about when he and his sister can reclaim their ship. Aarrba reminds them of their outstanding debts and expresses his disapproval of the siblings' imprudent business practices. Subsequently, he is confronted by a pair of bounty hunters, who caution him that he and Jori are in trouble with Ssk Kahorr due to their hazardous hyperspace route. The bounty hunters had successfully located them by interrogating and murdering Shodon Ko from the Hyperspace Navigator's Guild.
Driven by vengeance, Ssk Kahorr, while consuming insects, enlists the bounty hunters to pursue and eliminate Gav and Jori. The bounty hunters eventually catch up with the siblings, but they manage to escape with assistance from Odan-Urr and Memit Nadill. The Daragons take cover in an alley, and Gav resolves to steal back the Starbreaker 12 and venture further than they ever have before. They infiltrate Aarrba's dock and succeed in their endeavor, but are promptly pursued by Cinnagar security forces. Jori inputs random coordinates, propelling the Starbreaker 12 into uncharted territory.
