title: Time of Death

The short story called "Time of Death," penned by Cavan Scott, appears in the anthology From a Certain Point of View. The narrative is presented entirely from the perspective of the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it centers on the instant Darth Vader defeats him on board the Death Star.

Plot summary

During his confrontation with Darth Vader on the Death Star, the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi reflects upon his final moments. Interwoven with the duel against Lord Vader are flashbacks showcasing various periods of Kenobi's existence. As Vader's lightsaber pierces Kenobi's body, Kenobi is transported to a vision of his humble abode on Tatooine. Kenobi recognizes this as a memory of his younger self shortly after his arrival on Tatooine.

Kenobi then sees a vision of a newborn baby, held in his arms, crying as his mother takes her last breath. Kenobi then witnesses his deceased Master Qui-Gon Jinn succumbing to the injuries inflicted by Darth Maul. Following this is a vision of Maul's burning funeral pyre. After hearing a voice calling out to him, Kenobi finds himself within the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. There, he encounters Yoda, who imparts the wisdom that everything happens for a reason.

Kenobi next sees a "ghost" of his younger self tossing and turning in bed. A voice informs the younger Kenobi that Luke Skywalker is in danger. Kenobi responds with "Yes, master," and then embarks on his steed, Neda. Kenobi rides Neda to Owen Lars' moisture farm. His thoughts are consumed by anxieties about potential threats to the young Skywalker and his family. Kenobi is then pulled back to the Death Star to face Darth Vader. As Lord Vader greets his former mentor, Kenobi has a vision of Padmé telling him that there is still good within Skywalker.

Returning to the present duel, Vader declares that the master-learner relationship has come full circle. Refusing to address Anakin by his given name, Kenobi retorts "only a master of evil, Darth" before engaging Vader in combat. During their fight, Kenobi has a vision of himself training the young Anakin with practice sticks. As Kenobi and Lord Vader continue their duel, Kenobi finds himself in a meeting with Owen Lars. Owen consents to raise Skywalker but insists that Kenobi stay away from the boy and that the boy must not learn anything about his father.

Skipping ahead to Kenobi's subsequent visit to the Lars moisture farm, Kenobi observes a three-year-old Skywalker sitting in a cross-legged position next to a moisture vaporator. Kenobi reflects that the boy bears a resemblance to his father. Back on the Death Star, Vader mocks Kenobi's diminished abilities. Kenobi warns Vader that if he were to strike him down, he would become more powerful than Vader could possibly imagine. Kenobi then experiences a flashback of himself defending the young Skywalker from a group of bandits who had launched an assault on the Lars moisture farm. Kenobi employs his lightsaber to fend off the attackers. A Gamorrean advances towards Kenobi, but Skywalker incapacitates him with a toy starfighter.

Owen tells Luke to retreat, and Kenobi repels the remaining bandits. He slays a Devaronian by bisecting him. Luke rushes towards Kenobi, but Owen strikes Kenobi in the face, asserting that he does not require his protection. Owen reprimands Kenobi for nearly endangering the boy's life and pledges to ensure his safety. Aunt Beru Whitesun Lars shakes her head in sorrow and guides Luke back inside. Kenobi believes he has failed Luke due to underestimating Owen's resentment towards him.

Returning to the Death Star, Vader says that Kenobi should not have returned. Despite Kenobi's concern that he has not finished Luke's training, he hears Qui-Gon advising him to sacrifice his life so that Luke can escape. Accepting his fate, Kenobi allows Vader to strike him down. As Kenobi merges with the Force, he perceives Luke's cry of anguish. Through the Force, Kenobi urges Luke to flee. Kenobi finds solace in the knowledge that he will always be present with Luke and that he will continue to guide him, even in death.
