Turret Room

The Turret Room was a tranquil space located inside the Theed Royal Palace, specifically in the capital city of Theed on the planet of Naboo. It was connected to a small temple dedicated to the veneration of past Naboo rulers and its original construction was commissioned by King Jafan. In the year 32 BBY, the Jedi High Council members were permitted access to the Turret Room as a private place to grieve the death of their fellow Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn, during their visit to Naboo for his funeral. Subsequently, Jedi Grand Master Yoda convened with Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi within the Turret Room to formally announce Obi-Wan's advancement to the rank of Jedi Knight.

Description

The Turret Room resided in a tower of the Theed Royal Palace.

The Turret Room was a peaceful room connected to a small temple inside the Royal Palace of Theed, the capital city on the planet Naboo. This square-shaped room was built inside a tower located on the palace's edge. Three of the room's walls featured large windows with white panels that overlooked a cliff edge. Brown columns, four in total, were situated on plinths in each corner of the chamber, between the different sets of windows. The floor was constructed from gray stone tiles, featuring a square pattern in the center composed of alternating rows of dark-gray and white tiles.

During 32 BBY, the room contained a pair of low chairs without backs positioned in front of one window, along with four chairs with high backs placed before the window opposite. The last window had a table beneath it, accompanied by four chairs, and adorned with a white cloth and a small plant pot.

History

Yoda meets with Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Turret Room.

King Jafan, the inaugural ruler during Naboo's Great Time of Peace, was responsible for the construction of both the Turret Room and its adjacent temple. The monarchs from the Royal House of Naboo would eventually use the temple to pay tribute to the great rulers of the past. In 32 BBY, the Jedi High Council was granted permission to use the Turret Room for private mourning and remembrance of their deceased colleague, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, upon their arrival on Naboo to attend his funeral.

Not long before the funeral took place, Jedi Grand Master Yoda engaged in a conversation with Jinn's Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, inside the Turret Room. During this meeting, Yoda informed Obi-Wan that the Council had awarded him the title of Jedi Knight. Yoda then shared his personal disagreement with Kenobi honoring Jinn's final wish to accept young Anakin Skywalker as a Padawan. However, since the Council did not share his reservations, Kenobi was permitted to train the boy.

Behind the scenes

The Turret Room set was raised to allow Frank Oz to control Yoda from beneath.

The Turret Room made its initial appearance in the 1999 prequel trilogy movie, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. After the movie's main filming was done and editing had started, George Lucas, the director, felt that one more scene was necessary. So, the scene set in the Turret Room was added to the movie in March 1998, as part of some extra shots filmed at Leavesden Studios.

The entire small set was built at the studio and lifted five feet off the ground. This was done so that Frank Oz, who did Yoda's voice and controlled the puppet, could fit underneath the floor. A part of the floor in the middle of the room could be taken out so Oz could work. The puppeteer wrote his lines on the inside of the hole, marking where Yoda would stop moving and start talking.

In the official Star Wars canon, the Turret Room was first given its name in the 2016 reference book called Star Wars: Complete Locations. The name came from the Star Wars Legends stories, where it was first used in the 2000 reference book, Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, which was written by Kristin Lund.
