The Nightbrother was a customized Kom'rk-class fighter/transport of the Kryze Gauntlet ship variant. Customized with a black and red color scheme, the starfighter featured rotating wings, a large hull, and was armed with two forward and two rear laser cannons.
As the leader of the Death Watch and the rest of the Shadow Collective, Maul used the Nightbrother as his flagship, commanding his forces from the ship in battles during the Confederacy of Independent Systems' campaign against the Shadow Collective.
Many years later during the reign of the Galactic Empire, the starfighter was still in Maul's service. In 2 BBY, Maul used the Nightbrother to flee Vizsla Keep 09 after the Rebel group known as the Spectres managed to free themselves from his captivity. However, Maul was able to perform a connection with the Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger after the two individuals combined their holocrons. Maul learned that his old enemy Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi still lived. Continuing his pursuit of Kenobi, Maul later used the Nightbrother to travel with Bridger to the planet Dathomir. After summoning the spirits of fallen Nightsisters, Maul learned that Kenobi was hiding on a planet with twin suns.
Maul flew the Nightbrother to the desert planet Tatooine, hoping to find and kill his old adversary Kenobi. Bridger also went to Tatooine to stop Maul. After Maul's death, he and the C1-series astromech droid Chopper used the ship to get back home to Chopper Base of the Phoenix Cell. Bridger later used the Nightbrother to get the help of Clan Wren for the Rebels stuck on Atollon during their battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn's Imperial forces.
In 1 BBY, Bridger, along with the Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus, Mandalorian warrior Sabine Wren, and Chopper traveled on the Gauntlet to Yavin 4, the headquarters of the Rebel Alliance.
The Nightbrother first appeared in the comic Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir 1 before appearing in Star Wars Rebels.
