Auntie Nags

Auntie Nags, a nanny droid programmed with a feminine programming, was part of the Leonis family. By the year 3272 according to the LY, she had been with them for so many generations that her acquisition was lost to memory. Similarly, the Leonis family had long forgotten her original model designation. Her primary responsibility was to care for the Leonis children, guiding them from their earliest years through adolescence, which also meant assisting them in their academic pursuits.

Biography

Serving the Leonises

For numerous generations, Auntie Nags was a member of the Leonis family. During the era of the Galactic Empire, she assisted Leo and his wife, Tepha Leonis, in raising their two offspring: their daughter, Dhara, and their son, Zare. Because Leo and Tepha were employed as agricultural scientists by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nags and her employers resided on several planets, including Hosk Station, Moorja, and Viamarr. She nurtured Dhara and Zare from infancy until they reached adolescence.

Moving to Lothal

By the time Dhara was fifteen and Zare was fourteen, the Leonis family had established themselves on Lothal, an Outer Rim world. This agricultural backwater was the focus of a new development initiative by the Empire. Soon after they settled there, Dhara gained acceptance into the Academy for Young Imperials located in Capital City, Lothal's main urban center. To celebrate Dhara's achievement, her parents hosted a celebratory dinner, which was attended by prominent Imperial figures such as Governor Arihnda Pryce, Lieutenant Piers Roddance, and Assistant Vice Minister Sarkos.

During the celebratory meal, Auntie Nags took on the role of serving refreshments to the attendees. She also reprimanded Zare for his lack of engagement in conversation with Sarkos, one of the guests. Despite feeling irritated, Zare refrained from snapping at her, showing her the respect he felt for her. Instead, he offered an apology, confessing that he was feeling dejected because he was not old enough to enroll in the Imperial Academy. Auntie Nags tried to boost Zare's spirits, reminding him that he was a Leonis and encouraging him to make the most of his situation by dedicating himself to his studies at the Junior Academy of Applied Sciences until he could join his sister at the Academy the following year. She then resumed serving jogan clusters and suggested that Zare converse with Ames Bunkle, who was one of Dhara's classmates at the Academy.

Auntie Nags disapproved of Zare's participation in the grav-ball team at his school, known as the AppSci SaberCats, as she considered grav-ball to be a dangerous and unclean sport. Zare's mother, Tepha, shared this sentiment, expressing her disappointment with Lothal's obsession with the full-contact sport. During a visit to the Imperial Academy, when Zare was discussing Nags' views with his sister Dhara, Dhara jokingly inquired whether Auntie Nags found "dirty" or "dangerous" to be the worse quality. Zare responded that he thought it was an even tie.

Growing Resistance to the Empire

Unbeknownst to Auntie Nags, Zare had formed a friendship with Beck Ollet, a fellow grav-ball player whose family's orchard had been seized by the Empire to make way for a mineral extraction project. One evening, Zare, Beck, and their friend Merei Spanjaf, a skilled hacker, discovered that unknown insurgents had placed explosives on Imperial mining droids in the Westhills. After the insurgents had disappeared, Beck intentionally provided the Imperial authorities with inaccurate directions, allowing them to escape capture.

Following that event, Auntie Nags roused Zare the following morning to let him know that an Imperial officer was at their home. She told him that the officer wished to speak with him at the Security Ministry. After informing Zare that his parents were offering the visitor a cup of caf, her eyes briefly glowed red. She then proceeded to scold Zare for embarking on a "foolish adventure" with his friends. Zare accused her of listening in on private conversations and denied any involvement in wrongdoing. Upon hearing that, Auntie Nags rolled away, muttering to herself. Zare subsequently cooperated with the officer, but he left out any mention of Beck's actions.

During the winter season, Zare had a disagreement with Janus Fhurek, his school's athletic director. Fhurek, a bigoted individual, had demanded that Zare remove the two alien members of the SaberCats, the Rodian Frid Kelio and the Aqualish [Hench Sina](/article/hench_sina], from the team in order to appease "bigoted" fans. Zare, being fair-minded, stood his ground and refused to comply. At dinner, he shared the incident with his parents and Auntie Nags. The nanny droid commented that Fhurek had clearly not been raised properly, a view that was shared by both Leo and Tepha.

After a grav-ball competition, Zare and Beck went to the Westhills, where they discovered that the Imperials were using dangerous mining equipment. When he got back home, Auntie Nags scolded Zare for being so dirty and began bustling around the kitchen, searching for nonexistent dust particles. When Zare asked for something warm to drink, she complained that it would keep him awake all night. She also reminded Zare that his sister would be returning home for the winter break this week and that he needed to finish his application to join the Imperial Academy. However, she eventually agreed to make him some hot chocolate. When Zare became emotional about his dilemma regarding whether to join the Academy, Auntie Nags patted him on the shoulder and offered comfort.

Dhara came back in time for Zare's fifteenth birthday. That evening, Auntie Nags presented a decorated glazed birthday cake. During the spring season, Zare was careful not to cause Auntie Nags any concern and focused on his exams. However, on one occasion, Zare and Beck witnessed Imperial troops firing on a group of farmers who were protesting their eviction in the Westhills. When Zare returned home, he ignored Auntie Nags's barrage of questions and sat down to watch a HoloNet report on the shooting, which was factually inaccurate and portrayed the farmers as the aggressors.

The Disappearance of Dhara

Auntie Nags's constant fretting over minor issues did little to prepare her for a significant crisis within the Leonis family. Dhara Leonis vanished for over a week during a training exercise in the Easthills. Auntie Nags was present when Commandant Cumberlayne Aresko came to the Leonis residence to announce that Dhara had run away. The nanny droid was so distressed by the news that she began running around the kitchen in circles, repeatedly exclaiming "Oh dear." Despite the Imperial authorities' efforts to find her, no trace of Dhara was ever found on Lothal.

While Leo accepted the official Imperial explanation and blamed himself for not noticing his daughter's supposed distress, Zare and Tepha were doubtful. During the summer season, Zare, inspired by his friends Beck and Merei, came up with a plan to infiltrate the Imperial Academy to find out what had happened to his sister. After getting home, Zare shared his idea with his mother, Tepha. Knowing that Auntie Nags was prone to eavesdropping, Zare asked the nanny droid to perform a manual shutdown. Despite her objections, Nags reluctantly complied with his request. While Auntie Nags was deactivated, Tepha reluctantly agreed to Zare's plan but cautioned him that they could never tell his father, who was a strong supporter of the Empire.

During Zare's farewell dinner before joining the Imperial Academy, Auntie Nags served the guests trays of delicate treats. Commandant Aresko and his aide, Taskmaster Myles Grint, dominated her trays of dainties. This farewell dinner helped to maintain the illusion that Zare and his family were loyal Imperial citizens.

Zare at the Academy

Auntie Nags continued to serve the Leonis family while Zare Leonis was undergoing his training at the Academy for Young Imperials. When Merei Spanjaf, Zare's girlfriend, visited the Leonis residence, Nags greeted her at the door. When Merei inquired whether Tepha was at home, her eyes flashed yellow because Merei had not addressed her master as Mrs. Leonis. Despite her annoyance with the teenager, she still informed Tepha that Merei had come to visit her. During the visit, Merei assured Tepha that she was continuing her search for Dhara. Along with Zare, Merei and Tepha did not believe the official Imperial story about Dhara's disappearance.

When Zare returned to visit the Leonis family home during the winter season, she was still bustling about when Leonis entered the kitchen. Noticing that he had woken up early, she offered him a mug of hot chocolate, which he gladly accepted. While Leonis was sipping his drink, Auntie Nags fawned over him and chatted about how empty the apartment seemed without him around. When she recalled that she had forgotten to mention his missing sister Dhara, her photo-receptors turned yellow as she apologized to Zare.

When Zare confided that he missed his sister, Nags assured the young Cadet by telling him that Dhara would be proud of her brother if she knew how he had progressed. She recalled that a year ago, Dhara had talked about how she could not wait for her brother to learn everything she was learning. Nags even recalled that Zare was sitting at the spot where she had been sitting during the last winter break. During the last day of the winter break, Nags was annoyed when Zare and Tepha decided to go on a shopping trip to Capital City's marketplace without bring her along. Knowing her reputation for eavesdropping, her owners had not brought her along since they wanted to discuss Zare's plan to rescue his sister Dhara. Contrary to Imperial reports, Dhara had not run away but had been abducted for a secret Imperial program called Project Harvester, which was based as a secret installation connected to the Arkanis Academy.

After Zare was transferred to the Arkanis Academy as a reward for exposing a fellow Cadet Nazhros Oleg's attempt to pervert the course of justice by protecting his uncles, Auntie Nags answered the intercom when Zare's girlfriend Merei visited the Leonis family household. During her visit, Merei revealed the real reason why the Empire had transferred Zare to Arkanis early: they believed that he was connected to a rebel cell on Lothal. Due to its highly sensitive nature, Tepha did not share this information with Auntie Nags and Leo.

Following Zare's transfer to Arkanis, Auntie Nags answered his call in the comm terminal in the Leonises' apartment in Capital City. After accessing a comm booth in the nearby town of Scaparus Port, Zare had decided to contact his parents. Due to the time difference between Lothal and Arkanis, Zare's call reached the family household at midnight. Auntie Nags was grumpy at being disturbed in the middle of the night but accepted Leonis' explanation and passed the call to his mother Tepha.

Escaping Lothal

After Zare Leonis was arrested and scheduled for trial before a military tribunal on Arkanis, Merei and her mother Jessa traveled in a speeder to the Leonis family apartment in Capital City to warn them. When Merei pressed the family's call button, Auntie Nags answered the door and asked her to state her business. Shortly later, Nags opened the door to let the visitors in. Merei then told Tepha and Leo that they needed to flee into hiding because Zare had been arrested and put on trial. While Tepha knew the truth behind Dhara's disappearance and Zare's motives for joining the Imperial Academy, Auntie Nags and Leo reacted with shock and bewilderment.

After Leo was stunned by Merei, Auntie Nags complied with Tepha's orders to help carry Leo into the Spanjafs' speeder. While traveling on the highway to their prearranged escape rendezvous point in the Westhills, Auntie Nags sat beside Leo. After they were trapped by four drivers on speeder bikes, Auntie Nags and Tepha along with Merei and Jessa emerged from the vehicle to surrender. Fortunately for Auntie Nags and her masters, they were rescued by the Ithorian tavern keeper Old Jho whose freighter blasted the Imperials. Auntie Nags then accompanied the Leonises and the Spanjafs to a hideout on the planet Garel.

Personality and traits

Auntie Nags was a long-serving nanny droid who had been a part of the Leonis family for numerous generations. Her time with the family stretched back so far that the exact duration and her original model number had been forgotten. She was equipped with a wheeled locomotion system, [synthflesh](/article/synthflesh] hands, weather-sensing capabilities, and a programmed female personality. The color of her photoreceptors would change depending on her emotional state. When Auntie Nags was at peace, they would display a green hue, but they would shift to yellow when she was in a scolding mood, and turn red when she was angry.

Auntie Nags had a reputation for being both nagging and particular. She was known for her tendency to fuss over trivial matters, such as Zare bringing home what she perceived as dust particles and returning home dirty after playing grav-ball. Upon hearing that Dhara had vanished and supposedly run away, Auntie Nags became so distraught that she ran around the kitchen in circles. Despite her caring nature, Auntie Nags was also known to eavesdrop on conversations. This led Zare to instruct her to perform a manual shutdown on at least one occasion. The elderly nanny droid was never known to sleep except during her rare maintenance cycles. She usually puttered around the entire day. Nags was also able to remember seemingly trivial information like Dhara's exact seating position a year later.
