Barada

Before the Battle of Yavin and continuing for four years afterward, a Klatooinian named Barada was in the service of the Hutt crime lord Jabba. Barada was among the Hutt's underlings when Jabba attempted to execute a group of Rebels at the Great Pit of Carkoon situated on the planet Tatooine; he accompanied the prisoners to their intended demise. During the attempted execution, the Rebels began to fight for their freedom. In the ensuing conflict, the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker fatally struck Barada with his lightsaber, resulting in the Klatooinian's death.

Biography

Born on the planet Klatooine, Barada, a male Klatooinian, was eventually enslaved by the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure. This occurred four years following the Battle of Yavin. He functioned as both a mechanic and a skiff guard within Jabba's Palace located on the desert world of Tatooine. His responsibilities included maintaining the gangster's entire collection of repulsorlift vehicles, inclusive of his sail barge Khetanna, in addition to providing muscle. When Jabba held the smuggler [Han Solo](/article/han_solo], encased in carbonite, Barada was in Jabba's employ. Solo's allies in the Alliance to Restore the Republic hoped to liberate him, infiltrating Jabba's court with members such as Princess Leia Organa and Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker. These two attempted to free Solo, but instead became Jabba's prisoners alongside the Wookiee Chewbacca. After Jabba's [rancor](/article/rancor] failed to kill Skywalker, the crime lord decreed that Solo, Skywalker, and Chewbacca would be executed at the Great Pit of Carkoon, destined to be consumed by the sarlacc. Barada was among the henchmen selected by Jabba to ride on a separate skiff, accompanying the skiff transporting the prisoners to the pit. Upon arrival, Skywalker's astromech droid R2-D2, who was also in Jabba's service, provided the Jedi with his lightsaber. Skywalker swiftly used it to eliminate all the henchmen on his skiff. He then jumped to the skiff carrying Barada, killing several men before the Klatooinian engaged him. Skywalker evaded the attack and struck Barada, causing him to fall into the sarlacc pit. The Rebels then killed Jabba, destroyed his sail barge, and eliminated many other members of his court before escaping.

Skywalker's green lightsaber was the instrument of Barada's demise. Trapped within the Pit of Carkoon, Barada would undergo slow digestion by the sarlacc over a millennium. It was noted that Barada was famous for maintaining Jabba's skiffs in an artist's journal. This journal was restored, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive sometime after 34 ABY.

Barada possessed green skin and blue eyes. Despite being a slave, Barada found a degree of contentment and assisted in the upkeep of Jabba Desilijic Tiure's repulsorlift vehicles. He was experienced and knew how to handle the Hutt's volatile temper.

Barada's initial appearance was in the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, which concluded the Star Wars original trilogy. Concept sketches of Barada were created, followed by the crafting of maquettes. He was realized as a costume consisting of a slip-on mask and gloves representing hands. Several aliens resembling Barada were created for the sarlacc scene. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Barada's first appearance was in James Kahn's novelization of the film.
