Battle of Ponolapo

The Battle of Ponolapo represents one engagement within the larger Galactic Civil War, pitting forces of the Galactic Empire against those of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Sometime between the years of 3 ABY and 4 ABY, a relatively small rebel fleet executed an ambush on an Imperial convoy. This convoy was under the protection of the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer known as the Steadfast. The attack resulted in the death of the commanding officer, Commodore Freylon, as well as the destruction of the majority of the convoy's assets.

Background

During the period spanning 3 ABY to 4 ABY, the Crimson Dawn criminal syndicate engaged the Galactic Empire in open war. While the Empire ultimately prevailed over Crimson Dawn, the conflict necessitated the diversion of numerous ships from standard duties, creating vulnerabilities in established fleet deployments. Concurrently, the Empire was also actively combatting the Alliance to Restore the Republic as part of the ongoing Galactic Civil War. Despite frequent smaller clashes, neither the Empire nor the Rebel Alliance could achieve a significant victory that would decisively alter the balance of power across the galaxy.

The Conflict

The Battle of Ponolapo serves as an example of one such skirmish. It transpired between 3 ABY and 4 ABY when a limited rebel fleet surprised an Imperial convoy being guarded by the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer named Steadfast. Due to the prior engagements with Crimson Dawn, the Steadfast lacked its typical support contingent of Gozanti or Arquitens light cruisers. This absence allowed the Rebel forces to obliterate most of the convoy and inflict damage upon the Steadfast itself, leading to the death of its commanding officer, Commodore Freylon.

Consequences

Following the battle, Scaanos was promoted to Commodore, taking Freylon's place as commander of the Steadfast. This appointment deeply angered Captain Enric Pryde, the Steadfast's most tenured officer, who felt he was more deserving of the position. On the day after the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Pryde reflected on the Battle of Ponolapo while dwelling on his resentment towards Scaanos. Pryde attributed Freylon's demise during the battle to the Commodore's own negligence.

Records pertaining to the Battle of Ponolapo were accessible within the Rebel Alliance Archives. Additionally, details concerning the battle were present in Freylon's obituary, which was filed under the "Imperial Navy" section of the Imperial Archives. The historian Beaumont Kin consulted both of these sources when referencing the battle in his book, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, published in 35 ABY.

Behind the curtain

The Battle of Ponolapo was initially mentioned in the short story "The Steadfast Soldier", authored by Adam Christopher and featured in the 2023 anthology titled From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi. This story, set in 4 ABY, established that the battle occurred at least four years prior to the story's timeline. However, the 2024 reference work, Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, by Dr. Chris Kempshall, places the battle between Crimson Dawn's war with the Empire and the Battle of Endor, suggesting it took place during either 3 ABY or 4 ABY. This article operates under the assumption that Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire's placement of the battle is accurate.
