Bleeding-rock sap

Bleeding-rock sap was a sweet and sticky crimson sap originating from the bleeding rock organism. This organism was native to the planet of Li-Toran. The sap served as the primary liquid diet for the insectoid Melitto species also found on Li-Toran, who gathered it from the planet's surface. When Melittos ventured away from Li-Toran, they relied on special survival devices that produced sweet-smelling liquids, replicating the sap by processing local foodstuff.

During his galactic culinary journey between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs journeyed to Li-Toran to obtain some of the sap. Due to the planet's toxic atmosphere, he was required to wear environmental gear. Tuggs then utilized the sap to sweeten individual cornbreads, resulting in Melitto Sap Cakes, a vegetarian cake. He included the recipe for this cake in his third cookbook, entitled The Ultimate Cookbook, which saw publication in 35 ABY. Within the book, he expressed his bewilderment at how the Melittos consumed the sap, given their lack of visible mouths.

Behind the scenes

The first reference to bleeding-rock sap appeared in Cyphers and Masks, a 2018 supplement for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games. In the 2023 cookbook Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, authored by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak, honey is used as an out-of-universe substitute for the sap in the recipe.
