Carnivorous creatures known as bog rats dwelled on the planet of Bogano. These quadrupeds possessed tough hides and a singular, large eye, but their poor vision made them vulnerable to the oggdo. These animals typically hunted together, preying on smaller life forms such as boglings, but they would also attack sentient beings. In 14 BBY, [Cal Kestis](/article/cal_kestis], a former Jedi Padawan, faced an attack by several bog rats on Bogano as he attempted to reach the ancient Vault constructed by the Zeffonians.
Bog rats were a non-sentient quadrupedal species that originated on Bogano. Their tough, wrinkled white skin, sometimes featuring red patches on their backs and upper legs, offered some resistance against lightsaber strikes. These creatures had a distinctive face with a single, large red eye above a mouth flanked by a feeler on each side. Three small spikes extended from each side of their chin behind the feelers. Each of their limbs terminated in a four-fingered hand equipped with long, digging talons. A lengthy tail also extended from the end of their body.
As simple predators, bog rats consumed smaller fauna like boglings, while simultaneously serving as food for their natural adversary, the oggdo. Their weak eyesight made them easy targets for oggdos. Known for their hyper-aggression and territorial nature, bog rats frequently hunted in groups to encircle their prey. This tactic allowed them to threaten larger beings, including humans. During combat, they would feign retreat and burrow underground before launching surprise attacks.
They were also known to develop mutualistic relationships with their predatory neighbours, the splox. Splox would disrupt bogling nests, drawing them to the surface where bog rats could consume them. With the adult boglings eliminated, splox would then burrow into the nests and consume the eggs without disturbance.
By 14 BBY, bog rats were a common nuisance on Bogano, frequently encountered near the Bogano Vault crafted by the Zeffo civilization. When former Padawan Cal Kestis arrived on Bogano with former Jedi Cere Junda, he was confronted by hostile bog rats while attempting to reach the Vault. Two of these bog rats occupied the abandoned Hermit's Abode of the Jedi Eno Cordova. Upon entering the structure through a pipe, Kestis witnessed one of the bog rats attacking a bogling that emerged from a burrow within the abode. BD-1, Kestis's droid companion, jumped down and attacked the bog rat. This allowed the bogling to escape, but resulted in the bog rat hurling BD-1 across the room and damaging the droid's scomp link and leg. Kestis then eliminated the two bog rats and repaired BD-1's leg.
When Kestis and BD-1 were captured by the Haxion Brood criminal syndicate, numerous captive bog rats were held on the brood's asteroid space station, Ordo Eris, for use in gladiatorial contests. During his escape from the station, Kestis passed a cell containing two living bog rats, and another with three bog rat corpses. Numerous bog rat remains were also discarded through large chutes on the station along with other animal carcasses. When Kestis and BD-1 entered a gladiatorial arena on the station, a pair of bog rats were released alongside bane back spiders and splox to fight them, although Kestis successfully slew everything sent against him and escaped.
The first appearance of bog rats was in the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which was developed by Respawn Entertainment. Within the game, they function as enemies that players encounter on Bogano. The bog rat was intended to be a simple, foundational enemy. The design team explored a wide range of concepts before deciding on a combination of a prairie dog and a one-eyed, shelled caterpillar. Jean-Francois Rey created bog rat concept art.
