Bogano Vault

The structure known as the Bogano Vault, alternatively referred to as the Ancient Vault, the Zeffo Vault, or simply the Vault, was a secure location erected on Bogano by the Zeffonian species. This Vault relied on both a Zeffo artifact, specifically an astrium, and proficiency in the Force for access, secured by ancient Zeffo technological systems.

History

Ancient history

Constructed many years before the Clone Wars conflict, the Bogano Vault was built using karnite, a mineral-rich stone that was mined from Bogano's planetary surface. The Vault's interior space contained fragile, antique offering vessels, remnants left by pilgrims from long ago. The interior walls of this large structure displayed inscriptions etched into metallic plating. Images of both Miktrull and astriums were present in the vault's murals, which had survived the efforts of Sage Kujet to eradicate all astrium depictions.

Republic era

The central chamber of the Vault

Jedi Master Eno Cordova made the discovery of the Vault while researching the long-gone Zeffonians. The Vault's opening required a Force-sensitive individual skilled in the Force and in possession of a Zeffo astrium. Cordova utilized the Vault as a hiding place for a Jedi holocron that contained a listing of Force-sensitive children, intended for potential Jedi Order](/article/jedi_order) reconstruction.

Imperial era

Together, former Jedi Cere Junda and Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis went to the Vault with the hopes of rebuilding the Jedi Order.

Some years following Order 66, Cere Junda escorted Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis to the Vault, with the intention of using the holocron to rebuild the Jedi Order.

After Cal's return to the planet with an astrium obtained from Dathomir, he inserted it into the Vault, triggering a vision of Padawans he was training. The Empire subsequently launched an assault, and Cal witnessed a vision of himself as an Inquisitor overseeing the torture of younglings to force their surrender. Upon awakening, Cal seized the holocron, only to be confronted by the Second Sister. A duel ensued, during which Cal managed to take her lightsaber, gaining an echo of her past suffering. Trilla escaped with the holocron, leaving a squad of stormtroopers to confront Cal.

Princess Leia Organa and aspiring Jedi Luke Skywalker visited the Vault when they went to Bogano.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Bogano Vault was visited by rebels Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, who were surveying planets as potential sites for a rebel base. The presence of stormtroopers on the planet alerted them to the Empire's prior discovery of the location.

New Republic era

By 34 ABY, Boglings had tunneled into the decaying Bogano Vault ruins, establishing a habitat within its central chamber. This discovery was made by SF-R3 and CAM during their visit to Bogano in search of a Bogling. The pair traversed a cave that opened into a breach in the central chamber's wall, finding it populated by Boglings.

Behind the scenes

Conception and appearances

The Bogano Vault was originally conceived for the single-player video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, created by Respawn Entertainment and distributed by Electronic Arts (EA). This title marked the initial entry in the Star Wars Jedi series, launching on November 15, 2019. The location was first shown in the game's "Cal's Mission" trailer on September 26, 2019, and was formally identified as the "Bogano Vault" within the game itself. Concept art was crafted by Gabe Yeganyan. Similar to the game's broader design, the location exhibits strong influences from 3D Metroidvania design—a subgenre of action-adventure games characterized by expansive, interconnected maps that unlock new paths as players advance.

Inconsistencies

The Bogano Vault, as depicted in the "The Princess and the Bog, A Twin Tale Part 1" comic story

The vault later appeared in the seventh and eighth editions of the Star Wars Adventures comic book series, featured in "The Princess and the Bog, A Twin Tale" Part 1 and 2, authored by Sam Maggs and published by IDW Publishing. "The Princess and the Bog, A Twin Tale" Part 1 debuted on July 28, 2021, with Part 2 following on August 18, 2021. The comic stories depict the vault's lower section as a mound situated atop a hill, with a shorter overall height.

Internally, the comic stories illustrate two Zeffonian murals beside a semicircular mirror. These depictions conflict with Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, which portrays the vault's base as a hemisphere positioned at the edge of a cliff. The game also shows the vault's upper portion as taller and features an interior mural of Zeffonians adjacent to two semicircular mirrors. In the "Bogling" episode, the vault lacks the slot for inserting an astrium to "perceive the mysteries of the vault" and is not shown as partially submerged in water. While these details contradict the video game, the absence of partial submersion can be attributed to the time difference between the game and the episode.
