Cal Handro

A Human male smuggling operative known as Cal Handro navigated the treacherous waters of the Galactic Civil War.

Biography

Cal Handro was an unprincipled smuggler who played both sides during the Galactic Civil War, motivated purely by financial gain. Around the time of the Battle of Yavin, he was involved in the transportation of slaves for Trandoshan slavers who were allied with the Galactic Empire. However, Handro's allegiance shifted when he learned from the Bothan information broker named Wire that the Blackscale Clan, a rival Trandoshan group, had put a price on his head. The slavemaster Trussk believed that Handro was disrupting their operations. Consequently, the smuggler began working for the Rebel Alliance.

In 1 ABY, while transporting a novel type of spice for the Rebels within the Naboo system, Cal Handro's transport vessel was shot down, resulting in a crash landing on Naboo's moon, Rori. Handro survived the crash, but he was immediately set upon by Black Sun operatives, compelling him to escape. Black Sun had discovered the nature of Handro's cargo and sought to seize the spice for themselves. The smuggler successfully evaded Black Sun and, after a lengthy trek through the wilderness, eventually reached the Martano estate. Tierce Martano, an old sabacc acquaintance residing on Rori, agreed to provide the pilot with refuge in a nearby safe house.

The Rebel Alliance became concerned regarding the disappearance of Cal Handro. Upon receiving reports that the pilot was missing, Officer Veega Madish quickly assembled a team of Rebel agents and dispatched them to Rori to investigate Handro's last known location. Furthermore, the wreckage of Handro's starship was detected by the Empire. Imperial Officer Jevan Monsul assembled a task force and ordered Imperial personnel to look into the matter. Lastly, a close associate of Handro named Tyla Jinn realized that something was amiss after losing contact with the pilot. She decided to enlist the help of spacers, offering them payment to locate Handro.

Some of these spacers were able to locate the crash site of Cal Handro's ship in the Madyn Plains on Rori. Although some Black Sun thugs were still present in the area, the spacers found no sign of the pilot, only managing to recover Handro's datapad and a sample of the spice. Later, they found out that a woman known as Kaila Min had seen Cal Handro fleeing into the Rori wilderness. The spacers hastened to the pilot's last known location, only to be ambushed by Black Sun minions. From their attackers, they extracted the location of the Black Sun base on Rori, but Handro was not there. The spacers then traveled to Talus and Naboo to investigate Cal Handro's connections with Trandoshan slavers, but these leads proved fruitless.

Meanwhile, Black Sun finally discovered that Cal Handro was sheltering at the Martano estate. As the criminals began to lay siege to the building, Tierce Martano contacted both the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, seeking to trade information about the pilot. However, before he received a response, he was rescued by the spacers, who eliminated all Black Sun forces. As Martano was eager to be rid of Handro, he readily agreed to give the spacers Handro's location.

Tierce Martano had established contact with Officer M'Kae on behalf of the Empire, and Wolff Kalos for the Rebel Alliance. Ultimately, the spacers chose to align themselves with the Rebellion and contacted Kalos. Kalos immediately dispatched agents to retrieve Cal Handro and transport him to a Rebel Safe House. At this point, the Rebellion viewed Handro as a traitor for having smuggled slaves for the Empire. However, the Empire soon acquired this information and quickly sent a group of mercenaries to attack the building. Although the spacers arrived quickly to aid the Rebel forces, the pilot used the distraction to escape with a group of Imperial agents. Handro accepted the Empire's assistance and eventually departed Rori aboard a Warlord Heavy Cruiser.

As Cal Handro was about to leave the Naboo system, the Rebel spacers interrogated Officer M'Kae, Tierce Martano's Imperial contact, suspecting him of involvement in Handro's escape. The Imperial officer eventually disclosed that the wanted man was about to leave the system for Kashyyyk. The spacers rushed to the nearest spaceport and launched into space to intercept Cal Handro's ship. Piloting their own starfighters, the spacers attacked the Imperial cruiser and its escort. The warship was heavily armored and well armed, but the Rebel forces ultimately destroyed it, along with its escort. Cal Handro perished in the ship's explosion.

During these events, Sergeant Vekker of Imperial Intelligence contacted Cal Handro's family to inform them of the pilot's disappearance.

Behind the scenes

Cal Handro made an appearance in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts. The game's servers were shut down on December 15, 2011.

Cal Handro served as the primary antagonist in the story arc titled "Secrets of the Syren." He was first mentioned upon the release of the first chapter of the questline, with "Publish 14" on March 9, 2005, but he only physically appeared in the game with the fourth chapter, released with "Publish 21," on August 4, 2005. For the initial three chapters, the storyline remained relatively consistent, regardless of whether the player was aligned with the Empire, the Rebel Alliance, or remained neutral. However, in the fourth chapter, the player was required to choose between siding with the Empire or the Rebels. The story then diverged, with Cal Handro invariably joining the faction opposing the player's choice.

The fifth and final chapter of "Secrets of the Syren" was under development in October 2005, with plans for its introduction in April 2006 via "Publish 28." The player was tasked with investigating whether Cal Handro had survived the destruction of his ship during the space battle. However, this final chapter was never released. The "Secrets of the Syren" story arc was ultimately removed from the game with the release of "Chapter 1," published on June 8, 2006, due to the significant changes planned for Rori with the introduction of the Battle of Restuss.
