Cariso Smadis

Cariso Smadis, holding the rank of ensign, was a male human who fought for the Rebel Alliance Fleet. He was assigned to the Tantive IV, a CR90 corvette serving as the consular ship for Princess Leia Organa. In 0 BBY, the vessel was fleeing Scarif with the stolen plans for the Imperial superweapon, the Death Star. The Devastator, an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, pursued and ultimately disabled the Tantive IV above Tatooine. Smadis was among the crew who defended the port airlock against the boarding stormtroopers of the Empire. Though the Imperials ultimately seized the ship, Smadis and his comrades provided time for Organa to transmit the plans off the vessel.

Biography

Cariso Smadis, an ensign, was a male human serving the Alliance to Restore the Republic's fleet. His duty station was the CR90 corvette Tantive IV, protecting Princess Leia Organa, who was the representative of Alderaan in the Imperial Senate and used the starship as her consular ship. In 0 BBY, Organa and the Tantive IV were tasked with a mission to Tatooine. However, before repairs could be completed at the rebel headquarters on Yavin 4's moon, the Alliance fleet mobilized to support rebel forces attempting to acquire the plans for the Death Star superweapon from the Empire on Scarif.

The Tantive IV, still undergoing repairs, journeyed to the Scarif system within the hangar of the MC75 Star Cruiser Profundity. During the Battle of Scarif, the Death Star plans were transmitted to the Profundity. When the Profundity was disabled by the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Devastator, the plans were transferred to the Tantive IV, which then escaped the Scarif system. The Devastator pursued the corvette and caught up with it above Tatooine, where the Imperials disabled the vessel.

As a tractor beam pulled the corvette into the Devastator's hangar, the troopers rushed to the port airlock, based on sensor readings indicating the Imperials' point of entry. As a TIE boarding shuttle breached the airlock, stormtroopers flooded the Tantive IV. Smadis and his comrades exchanged fire with the Imperials, but were either killed or forced into retreat. However, their actions provided Organa with the necessary time to entrust the plans to the astromech droid R2-D2, allowing the droid to escape before the Imperials gained full control. Following the capture of the Tantive IV, the Empire declared to the media that the ship had been destroyed by a meteor collision, resulting in the deaths of all on board.

Personality and traits

Like his fellow rebels aboard the Tantive IV, Smadis was loyal to Alderaan and the House of Organa, willing to sacrifice his life for the rebel cause. He had light skin, brown eyes, and brown hair.

Equipment

Smadis wore the black and light blue uniform of the Alderaanian consular security, a common sight within the Alliance. This included a white Alderaanian fleet trooper helmet with a built-in comlink and flash visor, though Smadis did not lower the visor during the battle on the Tantive IV. He wielded a DH-17 blaster pistol in combat.

Behind the scenes

Cariso Smadis made his debut in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the 1977 original trilogy film. His scenes were shot at Elstree Studios on Stage 9 between June 29 and July 16, 1976. Within current Star Wars canon, Smadis's name appeared in the mobile card game Star Wars: Force Collection, initially released in 2013. Despite Force Collection's launch preceding the 2014 canon reset, Lucasfilm Story Group member Leland Chee confirmed that the game was updated to align with canon. The name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, first appearing in the third chapter of StarWars.com's Visual Guides feature, published on April 30, 2007.
