Cauley, a human, held the rank of ensign within the Imperial Navy. He served on the Imperial Star Destroyer Ultimatum during the Gorse Conflict circa 11 BBY. During this conflict, the cyborg Count Denetrius Vidian of the Empire sought to enhance thorilide mining operations on the planet Gorse and its moon, Cynda. Shortly after the Ultimatum's arrival to the Gorse system, Vidian tapped into the data stream from Cauley's console on the Ultimatum's bridge and routed it to his optical implants. Initially puzzled by Vidian's actions, Cauley, who was unaware of the count's intentions, was soon allowed to resume his duties.
As the Gorse Conflict neared its end, Cauley informed Rae Sloane, the Ultimatum's captain, about the activities of the freighter Moonglow-72, which was attempting to thwart Vidian's plan to destroy Cynda. Cauley remained on the Ultimatum when Captain Canonhaus temporarily took command while Sloane was away on an inspection. While Sloane was gone, the Ultimatum met its end in the Hoth asteroid belt in 3 ABY, with death for everyone on board.
Around 11 BBY, Cauley's assignment in the Imperial Navy was as an ensign and tactical officer aboard the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Ultimatum during the vessel's mission to the planet Gorse. Under the command of Captain Rae Sloane, the Star Destroyer served to transport and support the cyborg Count Denetrius Vidian as he worked to make thorilide mining more efficient on Gorse's moon, Cynda.
Upon the Ultimatum's initial arrival in the Gorse system, Cauley was at his station at a tactical console on the Star Destroyer's bridge, which displayed the locations of all the other ships in the star system. Immediately upon exiting hyperspace, the Ultimatum nearly collided with a freighter known as Cynda Dreaming, which clipped the larger vessel while narrowly avoiding a direct hit. Shortly after, Vidian came to the bridge, pushed past Cauley to get to his console, and began feeding the visual output from the ensign's screen into his optical implants, which allowed the count to monitor the nearby vessels and Cauley to return to his work. After the Mining Guild started sending thorolide production totals to the Ultimatum, Vidian moved away from Cauley's station to a data terminal. He then gave the order to destroy Cynda Dreaming after learning that the freighter was delaying the convoy of ships heading from Gorse to Cynda.

Cauley was at his station on the bridge as the Ultimatum oversaw freighters transporting canisters of the explosive chemical baradium-357 from the Calcoraan Depot space station in the Calcoraan system to the Gorse system. This chemical was intended for the destruction of Cynda, allowing Vidian's vessel, the Forager, to harvest the thorilide from the resulting debris. However, a group of rebels, including the pilot Kanan Jarrus, became aware of the plan. Aboard the freighter Moonglow-72, they began destroying the TIE fighters guarding the baradium haulers. This rebel group also initiated harassing fire on the haulers themselves, which prevented the convoy from delivering their loads and frightened the pilots. Cauley attempted to understand the actions of the rogue freighter—dubbed Renegade One by Sloane—but he could not understand why it was not destroying the freighters.
Sloane, having encountered Jarrus previously, deduced that he and the rebels were trying to scare off the other haulers, a fact confirmed by Cauley, as any vessel approached by the Moonglow-72 attempted to flee and disable its ID transponder. The ensign then received a message from one of the surviving TIE fighters, reporting that it was chasing a fleeing hauler it had been escorting and requesting instructions. Sloane began issuing orders for interference, but communication with Cauley and the fighter was cut off when Renegade One destroyed it. Enraged, Sloane ordered a wing of fighters to eliminate Jarrus and his freighter. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the freighter's crew ultimately prevented the destruction of Cynda. Vidian's betrayal of the Empire was exposed, as his scheme to destroy the planet would have ultimately led to a shortage of thorilide. The Gorse conflict concluded when the rebel Skelly detonated the baradium stored on Moonglow-72 while the freighter was docked aboard the Forager, destroying the larger vessel and killing the count.
Cauley continued his service as an ensign aboard the Ultimatum when Captain Canonhaus assumed temporary command of the vessel while Sloane was away on an inspection of new shuttle technology with Lieutenant Kanna Deltic, who was in debt to Cauley for credits. During Sloane's absence of several weeks, the Ultimatum was part of Death Squadron and took part in the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY and the subsequent pursuit of the Millennium Falcon, a rebel vessel that escaped the battle into the Hoth asteroid belt. The Ultimatum and the rest of Death Squadron followed the Falcon into the asteroid field, where an asteroid struck the Star Destroyer, leading to its destruction and the death of all onboard. Upon hearing of the Star Destroyer's destruction, Deltic assumed that Cauley had been among those on board, which meant she would not have to repay the credits she owed him.
During the time of the Gorse conflict, Cauley, a human, was described as young and having a fresh-faced appearance. Vidian's action of inputting the data from Cauley's terminal into his optical implants caused him to become still and stare off into the distance, which confused Cauley, leading him to question what Vidian was doing. When Vidian allowed Cauley to resume his work, Captain Sloane believed that he was relieved to no longer have the count watching him. He spoke Galactic Basic Standard with a refined, aristocratic accent.
While at his terminal, Cauley used a headset.
Cauley's first appearance was in the 2014 novel A New Dawn, authored by John Jackson Miller.
