A data log backup served as a form of communications device, commonly implemented within luxurious racers, designed to capture and retain all incoming and outgoing transmissions to and from a ship. By the time of 34 ABY, a pilot hailing from the planet of Hosnian Prime had integrated such a system into their backup racer. During that year, Kazuda Xiono, a spy working for the Resistance, temporarily acquired the racer to participate in the All Aces Battle Royale race. He subsequently extracted the transmission from Marnia Un'la'na, an operative of the First Order, from the backup system of the craft.

By 34 ABY, many vessels originating from the planet of Hosnian Prime were equipped with these devices, including a backup racer belonging to one of the planet's pilots. In that year, this pilot brought their racer to the Colossus supertanker fuel depot to compete in the All Aces Battle Royale race.
Kazuda Xiono, a Resistance spy, obtained temporary use of the vehicle to enter the competition. He then used it to capture a data cache transmitted by Marnia Un'la'na, a Twi'lek informant, using a Republic encryption recorder. However, the ace pilot Hype Fazon's ship, the Green Ace, collided with the racer, causing the Resistance spy to crash. Initially disheartened by the recorder's destruction, Xiono realized that the racer's data log backup would have saved Un'la'na's data. He informed BB-8, his astromech droid, of his discovery. The Resistance spy then retrieved the transmission, cleared the ship's internal systems, and returned the vehicle to its owner's hangar.
