Biography

Ace Squadron

Hype Fazon's origins trace back to the Era of the Galactic Empire, having been born on the world of Rodia. His racing training occurred in the Voxx Cluster, a racetrack under the ownership of the unscrupulous Hutt, Vranki the Blue, who also operated a hotel and casino. In the years following the [Galactic Civil War](/article/galactic_civil_war], Hype departed from Vranki's service and made his home on the ocean planet Castilon, situated in the Western Reaches of the Mid Rim Territories within the galaxy. During the Era of the New Republic, Fazon rose to prominence as one of the most gifted pilots on the Colossus, a massive refueling station orbiting Castilon. Initially, he enjoyed a friendly relationship with fellow racer Tamara Ryvora, but their connection waned after Fazon secured a spot in Ace Squadron, a group comprised of the platform's most skilled pilots. As the Squadron Leader, he adopted the callsign "Ace One." Furthermore, his distinctive starfighter, known as the Green Ace, reflected both its appearance and his squadron affiliation. Together, Ace Squadron served as the primary defense force for the Colossus, protecting it from a variety of threats.

Similar to his teammates, Fazon participated in the Colossus' racing competitions, which contributed significantly to his growing fame. Over time, he became recognized as Ace Squadron's top racer, maintaining an undefeated streak for two years by 34 ABY. With his rising popularity, Fazon attracted numerous high-profile sponsors—including Aunt Z's Tavern and the Office of Acquisitions—whose logos he prominently displayed on his starship. As an Ace, he also took part in supply missions involving freighter escorts. However, he consistently refused to participate in any missions connected to the First Order, due to it being the last remnant of the Empire that ruled the galaxy when he was a kid so he knew how persistent and dangerous they were.

Defending the Colossus

In the course of an attack led by Captain Kragan Gorr and his gang, Fazon joined forces with fellow Aces Freya Fenris, Torra Doza, the daughter of his old friend Commander Venisa Doza who left to join the Resistance formed by Rebel hero General Leia Organa to protect the New Republic and the galaxy from the First Order, and Bo Keevil to repel the pirates. Despite the pirates' initial advantage, Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono disrupted their communications, forcing them to withdraw.

Xiono's first visit

Subsequently, when a fuel shortage caused a power outage on the Colossus, Fenris, Keevil, and Griff Halloran embarked on a supply mission to escort a First Order fuel freighter. Fazon, as was his custom during such missions, instead went to Aunt Z's Tavern, where he encountered Xiono, Ryvora's new colleague who flew in a sky race with Torra, heard her father and Venisa’s husband Captain Imanuel Doza, who owned the Colossus, might be working for the First Order from Aunt Z and was attempting to infiltrate Doza Tower, the location of the Aces' Lounge. Spotting Ryvora at Team Fireball's booth, Fazon was unable to approach her.

Hype and Tam argue

Later, Fazon overheard Ryvora and Xiono discussing him in the hallway, with Ryvora expressing her reasons for disliking him. Seeking to mend their friendship, Fazon invited them to the Aces Lounge, an offer Xiono readily accepted. At the lounge, Fazon commended Xiono on his performance in his sky race against Torra. A disagreement ensued with Ryvora regarding the Fireball, the antiquated racing ship she was repairing that Xiono flew for his sky race with Torra, as he believed that she would never become a star racer like him and the members of Ace Squadron with a ship that old. This prompted Ryvora to leave alone, as Xiono had slipped off to do some spying.

The Platform Classic

A photograph of Hype Fazon was displayed during the Platform Classic. Alongside Fazon's fellow Ace pilots, galactic racing champion Marcus Speedstar and his estranged older brother and Xiono’s employer Jarek Yeager also participated in the race. Speedstar emerged as the victor, using his winnings to secure the release of his friend Oplock.

Xiono's second visit

Hype and his fellow Aces were present in the Aces' Lounge when Xiono revisited Doza Tower as Torra's guest during a mission to gather intelligence on a meeting between her father and Stormtrooper Commander Pyre. During the visit, Hype recounted how he won the Sublight Star Five Million to Keevil. Hype then requested a round of bantha milk from Jace Rucklin, a racer who had fallen on hard times. When Rucklin argued with Xiono who he blamed for wrecking his life because he did not know how dangerous coaxium was when he powered his racer with it, Hype called for Rucklin again.

Casual adventures

Suspecting that his astromech droid R4-G77 required a new motivator, Hype visited the spare-part dealers Flix and Orka's Office of Acquisitions. R4-G77 proved uncooperative and struggled with Flix and Orka, who managed to subdue him after some difficulty.

Subsequently, Torra sought to dethrone Hype from his position as the top-ranked Ace. Prior to the race, Torra and Hype exchanged snipes at each other. During the early part of the race, Torra took the lead in her racer Blue Ace. However, Torra used up most of her booster fuel, allowing Hype to regain the lead. Hype then thanked himself over the intercom much to Torra's chagrin.

While escorting a fuel convoy, Hype reminded Ace Squadron they all needed to work as a team. Ace Squadron were then contacted by a stricken freighter, who was unable to control his ship's descent to the Colossus. With the ship unable to change course, Hype ordered his fellow Aces to latch onto the freighter in order to slow its descent. The Aces managed to slow down the freighter as it landed on the Colossus, narrowly avoiding an accident.

Bibo incident

During the Bibo incident, Hype spearheaded the defense of the Colossus against Bibo's mother, a rokkna sea monster. When Kaz came to help in the Fireball, Hype initially told the unauthorized ship to clear but accepted Kaz's help. Though they were unable to drive away the sea monster, Kaz's friend Neeku Vozo managed to appease the creature by returning her child Bibo.

Kidnapping of Torra Doza

Following the kidnapping of Torra, Hype and his pilots were dispatched in pursuit of her kidnappers. Torra got rescued by Major Elrik Vonreg, who convinced her father to accept the First Order’s protection. Some time later, Hype joined Yeager, Kaz, Torra, her father, Freya, and Bo in becoming members of a Citizens' Fleet assembled by General Lando Calrissian to assist the Resistance in their final match with the First Order on the planet Exegol in the Unknown Regions.

Personality and traits

Hype Fazon was known for his boastfulness, vanity, and arrogance. He reveled in the recognition he received as the Aces' top racer, a status that fueled his immense ego and showmanship. Despite his extravagance and pomposity, he cared about the well-being of his fellow Aces. He disliked the First Order, and refused to fly any supply missions involving them, considering their slowly-growing influence on the station a problem.

Fazon was a Rodian male characterized by blue eyes and green skin. His name, "Hype," was inscribed in Aurebesh on the front of his flight suit belt. Logos from various companies adorned his flight suit: A patch embellished the shoulder of his [jacket](/article/jacket], written in Outer Rim Basic, which bore the logo of Old Jho's Pit Stop located on Lothal planet. The right breast showed the symbol of Power Sliders on Abafar, while the left breast displayed a motif from Admiral Snackbar on the same world. The right breast of his jumpsuit showed the logo of 79's on Coruscant; while the cube motif of Outer Rim Supply Co. at Stobar Spaceport and Horizon Base, was printed on the abdomen.

Skills and abilities

Hype Fazon lived up to his reputation as the Aces' most talented racer, notwithstanding his ego, due to his exceptional piloting skills. The Green Ace was designed to be the perfect match for his pompous nature, having been plastered with the names and logos of his financial supporters. Beyond its extravagance, however, Fazon's racer boasted wings that could shift angles for maximum maneuverability while speeding through turns.

Behind the scenes

Hype Fazon is a character created for the Star Wars Resistance animated series. Donald Faison provides his voice, and the character's name and personality were inspired by him. Many of the logos he displays originated in the series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Faison secured the role following a conversation with Resistance showrunner Dave Filoni during the premiere of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, Filoni having seen a stop-motion animated short made by Faison entitled Black Stormtrooper, though Faison at first believed that Filoni didn't have him in mind after he wasn't called for Rebels.
