Platform Classic

The Platform Classic, a significant competition, occurred on the Colossus platform, situated on the planet of Castilon. In 34 ABY, Captain Imanuel Doza, who owned the platform, extended an invitation to the renowned racer Marcus Speedstar to participate in the Classic.

Prelude

A Sibling's Injustice

After the conclusion of the Galactic Civil War, Jarek Yeager and Marcus Speedstar transitioned into racing pilots, earning their livelihood through participation in starship races. While both possessed piloting skills, Yeager surpassed his brother in racing proficiency. Speedstar's motivations were monetary gain and fame, whereas Yeager raced to financially support his family, consisting of his wife and his daughter.

During a particular race, Speedstar attempted to enhance the speed of his racer, named Galaxy's Glory, by injecting hyperfuel. However, Speedstar misjudged the capabilities of his craft, resulting in a collision with his brother's racer, causing it to lose control. Yeager's racer subsequently crashed into a grandstand where his family was seated, leading to their deaths. Overwhelmed by grief, Yeager found himself unable to forgive his younger brother, leading to a complete severing of their relationship.

While Yeager chose to settle on the Colossus platform of Castilon, establishing a starship repair business, Speedstar continued to pursue his racing career. His associates included the Nikto named Oplock and the black astromech droid identified as R4-D12. He achieved considerable success as a racing pilot, securing the Five Sabers title on three separate occasions. However, by 34 ABY, his fortunes had declined following a series of race losses. Speedstar acquired loans from the Guavian Death Gang, thereby incurring substantial debt to the criminal organization.

A Frigid Return

In an effort to stimulate the Colossus' economic activity in the aftermath of a pirate raid, Captain Doza extended an invitation to Speedstar to compete in the Platform Classic. The competition's prize money amounted to 100,000 credits. Aware of Yeager's prior racing accomplishments, Doza also invited Yeager to participate in the race. However, Yeager declined to race alongside Speedstar due to his enduring resentment over his brother's role in the deaths of his family.

During his visit to the Colossus, Speedstar made attempts to reconcile with his older brother, but Yeager refused any form of communication. Unfamiliar with the history behind their strained relationship, Yeager's employees, Tamara Ryvora and Kazuda Xiono, endeavored to persuade Yeager to compete against the renowned champion. This provoked Yeager, leading him to confront Speedstar and urge him to withdraw from the race. Concurrently, Speedstar was visited by Guavian enforcers at Aunt Z's Tavern, who took Oplock as a hostage in an attempt to compel Speedstar to settle his outstanding debts.

At Aunt Z's Tavern, Yeager challenged Speedstar, demanding his withdrawal from the race. However, Speedstar was unwilling to concede, as he intended to use the prize money to repay his debts to the Guavians and secure Oplock's release. Yeager's scheme inadvertently resulted in patrons placing bets on the outcome between the two brothers. Reluctantly, Yeager agreed to participate in the Platform Classic, and the two brothers began preparing their racers.

The race

The Test of Skill

On the day of the race, both Yeager and Speedstar entered their respective racers. They were accompanied by their droids, Bucket and R4-D12. Other participants included members of Ace Squadron: Torra Doza, Hype Fazon, Bo Keevil, Griff Halloran, and Freya Fenris. Before the race commenced, Kaz attempted to persuade Yeager to make amends with his brother, revealing that Speedstar was racing to rescue his friend Oplock. Still consumed by bitterness over the loss of his family, Yeager expressed indifference.

While awaiting the countdown, Yeager mocked Speedstar about his droid via the comlink. Following a verbal exchange, Speedstar disclosed to Yeager that his purpose for visiting the Colossus extended beyond racing, encompassing a desire to reconcile with his brother. Yeager retorted that his brother had lost him irrevocably. During the initial phase, Speedstar assumed the lead, navigating through three hoops. He was closely followed by Yeager and the remaining racers.

During the obstacle course segment, Halloran discharged stun bolts at Keevil's racer, causing it to crash into the sea and elevating Halloran to fifth position. Subsequently, the fighters entered the second phase, involving an atmospheric ascent into space. While ascending, Yeager asserted to Speedstar that he could never offer forgiveness. Speedstar responded that he had been attempting to communicate with his brother for years.

Shifting Sentiments

The racers then transitioned into the third phase, requiring them to traverse an ion ring that temporarily disabled their ships, followed by a powerless descent into Castilon's atmosphere. The exchange continued, with Yeager attributing the loss of his family to Speedstar's actions. As the ships descended back into the lower atmosphere, they encountered a reignition hoop, which reactivated their engines.

During the descent phase, Yeager passed through the reignition hoop first, followed by Speedstar. Halloran attempted to ram Speedstar's racer, but the racer successfully navigated through the hoop, reigniting its engines. Halloran was compelled to eject from his fighter, allowing Fenris to advance to fifth place. During the final stretch, Speedstar conveyed an apology to Yeager over the intercom for causing the deaths of his family. He also informed Yeager that he needed to win the race to utilize the prize money to rescue his friend Oplock.

In an attempt to reconcile with his brother, Yeager withdrew his racer from the race, enabling Speedstar to surge through the final hoop and secure victory. The announcer Jak Sivrak declared Speedstar as the winner.

Aftermath

Following the Platform Classic, Speedstar utilized the prize money of 100,000 credits to settle his debts with the Guavian Death Gang and secure the release of his friend Oplock. Despite Yeager's loss in the race, the two brothers reconciled, as Yeager recognized that Speedstar's motivations extended beyond mere financial gain and fame, encompassing genuine care for his friends. Yeager and his Team Fireball observed as Speedstar and his team departed aboard their racer, the Galaxy's Glory.
