Oplock

Oplock, a male mechanic of the Esral'sa'Nikto species, served as a member of Marcus Speedstar's racing team, working alongside the astromech droid known as R4-D12. The incident around 20 ABY, when Speedstar's racing strategies inadvertently led to the deaths of Jarek Yeager's family during a sky race, did not deter Oplock, who chose to forgive his employer and remain on the team. The Esral'sa'Nikto demonstrated enduring loyalty to Speedstar over the subsequent years, developing a strong bond of friendship. Later, Speedstar accumulated significant debts to the Guavian Death Gang, prompting a hasty escape from the group's soldiers with Oplock on the planet of Rishi.

During 34 ABY, Oplock accompanied Speedstar to the supertanker fuel depot called Colossus located on Castilon to participate in the Platform Classic competition. While there, he and the pilot visited Jarek Yeager's Repair Station, where he greeted Yeager's colleagues, including Neeku Vozo, Tamara Ryvora, and Kazuda Xiono. Afterwards, the pair relaxed with drinks in a booth at the _Colossus'_s Aunt Z's Tavern. However, Guavian soldiers of the group entered the cantina and seized Oplock, holding him until Speedstar settled his financial obligations. Ultimately, Speedstar secured victory in the Platform Classic, after convincing Yeager to let him win, and used the winnings as money to secure Oplock's release.

Biography

Loyal companion

Oplock joined Marcus Speedstar's crew during the time of the New Republic.

Living in the era of the New Republic Era, Oplock, a male Esral'sa'Nikto, worked as a mechanic. He eventually became a valued and trusted member of Marcus Speedstar's team, serving as a loyal friend to the racer. In approximately 20 ABY, Speedstar competed in a sky race against his brother, Jarek Yeager, and used an excessive amount of hyperfuel in his starship to gain an unfair advantage. This resulted in Speedstar's ship crashing into the viewing platforms, causing the deaths of Yeager's wife and daughter. Despite this tragedy, Oplock extended forgiveness to his employer.

Yeager was angered by what he perceived as Speedstar's overwhelming desire for victory and recognition, which had led him to employ deceptive racing tactics that resulted in the loss of his family. Consequently, Yeager severed all ties with his brother and largely retired from racing, while Oplock remained with Speedstar. Although Speedstar initially attempted to reconcile with his brother, he eventually ceased his efforts, finding solace in Oplock's forgiveness and support in becoming a better person. Over the following years, the Esral'sa'Nikto continued to be a part of his employer's crew, alongside the astromech droid R4-D12, aiding in the maintenance of Speedstar's racing starfighter, named Galaxy's Glory. During this time, Speedstar's reputation grew throughout the galaxy as he achieved victories in various races, including becoming a three-time champion of the Five Sabers, a prestigious piloting competition held on Theron, and participating in the Baktan 5000 race.

Colossus arrival

At a later point, Speedstar experienced a series of losses and accumulated significant debts, totaling 20,000 credits, to the Guavian Death Gang, a criminal organization, after obtaining loans. In an attempt to evade the organization's debt collectors, he and Oplock executed a maneuver on the Outer Rim planet of Rishi to avoid a ship belonging to Guavian soldiers. Subsequently, Speedstar entered the Platform Classic race, which was to be held on the Mid Rim planet of Castilon, with the dual purpose of reuniting with Yeager and obtaining much-needed funds. In 34 ABY, Oplock accompanied Speedstar and R4-D12 to the supertanker fuel depot Colossus on Castilon for the Platform Classic event. When Speedstar made a visit to Yeager's repair shop on the Colossus, Oplock went with him as he attempted to apologize to his brother.

As they ventured further into the shop, the Esral'sa'Nikto greeted Yeager's employees—Tamara Ryvora, Kazuda Xiono, and Neeku Vozo, who was also a Nikto—with a warm and customary greeting of friendship in Cracek, his native language or tongue. While Xiono and Ryvora were initially startled by the Cracek greeting, Vozo clarified its meaning and introduced R4-D12 on Oplock's behalf as the Esral'sa'Nikto embraced him. On the other side of the repair shop, Yeager voiced his disapproval of Oplock's forgiveness of Speedstar, though the latter defended his friend's decision to remain loyal and judge him based on his present self. Shortly thereafter, Oplock departed Yeager's shop with his employer and R4-D12.

Hostage situation

Oplock was taken hostage by Guavian guards until Speedstar repaid his loans.

Oplock, Speedstar, and R4-D12 then made their way to Aunt Z's Tavern, where the first two enjoyed some beverages while seated in a booth. When a pair of Guavian Death Gang soldiers entered the cantina in search of Speedstar, Oplock nervously gripped his drink, taking sips while sinking further into his seat. The two soldiers dismissed Speedstar's explanations for the Rishi maneuver and forcibly took the mechanic into their custody. The racer reassured Oplock that he would be free within a few [hours](/article/standard_hour], after he had emerged victorious in the Platform Classic and used his prize money to settle his debts. As the Death Gang enforcers escorted the Esral'sa'Nikto away, Speedstar watched them leave with sorrow, asserting that he would win the upcoming race, as no other pilot on the station could compete with him.

Shortly after, Yeager entered Aunt Z's Tavern and declared that he would compete against Speedstar in the upcoming race. Although the former had anticipated that his brother would back down, Speedstar agreed to race his older sibling, knowing that he had to win in order to save Oplock. Yeager was surprised, having expected the other pilot to refuse to race him. Nevertheless, he remained determined to defeat Speedstar in order to teach him a lesson and assigned Xiono to assist him in preparing for the race, since Oplock had been apprehended. Despite Xiono's attempts to convince Yeager that his brother needed the Platform Classic's prize money to rescue Oplock, the older man insisted that it was not his concern.

The Platform Classic

Oplock was released by the Guavian Death Gang after Speedstar paid his debts.

Speedstar continued to plead with Yeager to listen both as they began the race and later as they flew alongside each other. Meanwhile, Oplock remained on the Colossus under the guard of two Guavian Death Gang enforcers who poked at him with their weapons. In the final stages of the Platform Classic, Speedstar offered a full apology to Yeager for the deaths of his family, emphasizing that he was racing in this competition to save Oplock, not for selfish reasons as he would have in the past. As they approached the end of the race, Yeager relented and moved aside, allowing Speedstar to win the Platform Classic.

Afterward, Speedstar used his prize money to pay off the Guavian Death Gang enforcers, who then released Oplock. Although Oplock was slightly displeased with the way the guards had treated him, Speedstar was overjoyed to have his trusted mechanic back. As their racing crew prepared to depart from the Colossus, the Esral'sa'Nikto assisted in carrying a supply case up a ladder. Once Speedstar and Yeager had parted on amicable terms, Oplock boarded the Galaxy's Glory with his employer and departed from the Colossus.

Personality and traits

According to Speedstar, Oplock was a forgiving individual who judged him based on who he was at present. Oplock remained loyal to Speedstar even after Yeager ended their relationship following a racing accident that resulted in the deaths of his wife and daughter. Oplock displayed fear and anxiety when he was taken hostage by the Guavian Death Gang to ensure that Speedstar would settle his debts. He was overjoyed when Speedstar won the race and was able to secure his freedom, happy to be reunited with his friend.
