Marcus Speedstar

Marcus Speedstar, a male human, was the brother of Jarek Yeager. Widely recognized as one of the most celebrated racers throughout the galaxy, Speedstar had claimed victory in the prestigious Five Sabers competition on three separate occasions. The two brothers were estranged, having been apart for a considerable time, until Speedstar's arrival at the Colossus platform to compete in the Platform Classic. His intentions were twofold: to secure the prize money to settle his debt with the Guavian Death Gang, and to reconnect with his brother. Although Yeager did not offer forgiveness for past events following the race, he assured Speedstar that reconciliation would eventually be possible.

Biography

A brother wronged

Jarek Yeager's younger brother was Marcus Speedstar. Jarek Yeager was once a starfighter pilot for the New Republic and then became a professional racer after the Galactic Civil War. Speedstar followed his brother into the racing industry and the two became skilled racers. However, Marcus was never able to defeat his older brother Yeager in any race.

Marcus once fueled his racer with hyperfuel in an attempt to outpace his older brother. Speedstar, however, underestimated the effect of the hyperfuel on his ship. Speedstar opened up the throttle during the final stretch of the race, when his racer was right next to Yeager's racer. This resulted in his racer spinning out of control and crashing into the stands, causing the deaths of Yeager's wife and daughter. Marcus' involvement in the deaths of Yeager's family severely damaged their relationship. Yeager severed contact with Marcus, refusing to communicate with him for several years.

Racing celebrity

Speedstar continued his racing career and became a successful racer, winning the Five Sabers three times and gaining galactic fame in his racer Galaxy's Glory, while Yeager retired from racing and became a mechanic at the Colossus platform on the ocean planet Castilon. His most loyal friends with the Esral'sa'Nikto Oplock and the astromech droid R4-D12, the former of who accepted his shortcomings and forgave him. Despite his racing successes, Marcus accumulated debts after losing two races. On one occasion, he angered the Guavian Death Gang when he interfered with one of their starships on Rishi.

An unhappy reunion

Speedstar decided to enter the Platform Classic on Castilon because of his mounting debts. Speedstar was able to persuade Captain Imanuel Doza, the administrator of the Colossus, to allow him to compete in the Platform Classic. However, Yeager declined to race his younger brother because he was still bitter about Marcus' role in the deaths of his family. Speedstar attempted to speak with his brother during their meeting with Commander Doza, but Yeager replied that he would not be ready for another decade.

Speedstar, Oplock, and R4-D12 later went to Yeager's garage. Yeager's employees Tamara Ryvora, Neeku Vozo, and Kazuda Xiono were welcoming, but Yeager was hostile and rejected Marcus' attempts to reconcile. Yeager accused Speedstar of being obsessed with fame, misjudging his motives. Speedstar, offended, retorted that he would win easily because Yeager was unwilling to compete in the Platform Classic.

Speedstar and his team later went to Aunt Z's Tavern. He bought drinks for several patrons there. Shortly afterwards, two Guavian security soldiers arrived and confronted Speedstar for touching one of the Guavian Death Gang's ships. Speedstar promised to repay them with the 100,000 credits prize money from the Platform Classic. The Guavian enforcers took his friend Oplock hostage to ensure Speedstar's compliance.

Yeager arrived at Aunt Z's Tavern shortly afterwards, attempting to intimidate Speedstar into withdrawing from the race by participating. Speedstar, determined to save his friend, refused to give up and stated that he needed the money to save Oplock. As a result, Aunt Z placed bets on both Yeager and Speedstar, forcing Yeager to compete in the Platform Classic.

The Platform Classic

After leaving the cantina, Yeager "loaned" Xiono, one of his mechanics, to Speedstar. While Xiono worked on repairing Speedstar's ship, Galaxy Home, the two took the opportunity to get to know each other. When Xiono praised Speedstar, telling him that he was one of the greatest racers in the galaxy, Speedstar said that Yeager was the best racer in the galaxy. Speedstar recounted Yeager's background before telling Xiono about the tragic accident that destroyed his relationship with Yeager. When Xiono inquired as to why he had come to Castilon, Speedstar informed him of his financial difficulties and his attempts to mend fences with Yeager.

Xiono, unaware of the accident's full details, informed Yeager that he needed to reconcile with Speedstar. Yeager revealed that he had lost his wife and child in the accident. Xiono attempted to persuade Yeager that Speedstar loved him, but Yeager dismissed Speedstar as someone solely concerned with fame, doubting the sincerity of Speedstar's intentions.

Speedstar and Yeager exchanged insults via comlink while waiting for the race to begin. Speedstar, Yeager, and the pilots of Ace Squadron flew through a series of rings during the first leg. Yeager was in the lead, with Speedstar in second place. The contestants completed an atmospheric climb into space for the second phase. Speedstar informed Yeager during the ascent that he had repeatedly attempted to speak with him.

Yeager blamed Speedstar for the loss of family as they re-entered Castilon's atmosphere. Yeager and Speedstar were able to fly their ships through a ring, reactivating their engines. Yeager mocked Speedstar during the final leg of the race, claiming that he couldn't beat him and demanding to know why he kept trying. Speedstar, distraught, stated that he was not seeking fame or money, but rather attempting to save a friend's life. Speedstar also reaffirmed his love for his brother and apologized for the pain he had caused him. Yeager, realizing that Speedstar's intentions were benign and genuine, decided to withdraw from the race, allowing Speedstar to win.

Reconciliation with Yeager

Following the race, Speedstar used the prize money to pay off the Guavian Death Gang, freeing his friend Oplock, who was overjoyed to see him. Yeager, in a charitable gesture, also assisted Speedstar in paying the ransom. Later, Speedstar and Yeager embraced at Yeager's garage. Yeager stated that he was pleased to have Speedstar back. While he was still unable to forgive Speedstar for the deaths of his family, Yeager stated that he would be able to forgive him one day. Speedstar and his team then departed on Galaxy's Glory.

Personality and traits

Marcus Speedstar was a male human with brown skin, brown eyes, and black hair. Speedstar had a close relationship with his older brother Jarek Yeager in his younger years, regarding him as his only family. As his older brother noted, Speedstar had a habit of not staying in one place for very long. Speedstar was also driven and dreamed of becoming the best racer in the galaxy, but he was unable to defeat his older brother Yeager. Speedstar attempted to gain an advantage over his brother by injecting hyperfuel into his racer's engine. This, however, backfired, and Speedstar's racer caused an accident that killed Yeager's wife and daughter.

Marcus Speedstar

Yeager refused to forgive Speedstar, rejecting the latter's attempts to reconcile with him for years. Oplock, a Nikto mechanic, was one of Speedstar's most loyal friends, possessing a forgiving nature and the ability to overlook Speedstar's flaws. Speedstar's friendship with Oplock motivated him to compete in a race in order to raise the ransom money required to free his friend. Despite his success as a racing champion, Speedstar had a habit of accumulating debts. His financial difficulties led him to borrow money from unscrupulous lenders such as the Guavian Death Gang.

Despite initially valuing fame and fortune, Speedstar came to value family more as a result of his financial difficulties. Speedstar persisted in his attempts to repair his relationship with Yeager, despite the latter's hostility and bitterness. Yeager relented after realizing that Speedstar genuinely wanted to save his friend Oplock from the Guavian Death Gang. While Yeager later reciprocated Speedstar's attempts at reconciliation, he was still unable to fully forgive him for his role in his family's deaths at the time.

Skills and abilities

Marcus Speedstar was a talented racer who was regarded as one of the best in the galaxy, having won the Five Sabers three times. He was second only to his older brother Jarek Yeager, a veteran of the Galactic Civil War.
