Voxx Cluster

The Voxx Cluster existed within the Outer Rim Territories' Ash Worlds region, identified as an asteroid field. Vranki's Hotel and Casino was situated here, amidst a purple-tinged nebulous expanse. This cluster of asteroids was also the location where Vranki organized a starfighter racing circuit among the asteroids, and it was in this very setting that the pilot Hype Fazon honed his skills as a racer.

In the year 34 ABY, the mobile space station known as Colossus made its way to the Voxx Cluster. Fazon had hoped that he and his fellow pilots from the station's Ace Squadron could participate in high-stakes racing to earn much-needed credits for the Colossus. However, Vranki employed quick, armed droid racers and other underhanded tactics to guarantee his own victory. During the Voxx Vortex 5000 races held in the Voxx Cluster, most of the Ace Squadron pilots were defeated by Vranki's droids, until Kazuda Xiono managed to win, thereby securing credits for the Colossus.

Description

The Voxx Cluster, an asteroid field, could be found in grid square S-7 of the Standard Galactic Grid. It was part of the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice, specifically within the sector of the [Ash Worlds](/article/ash_worlds]. The Voxx Cluster was characterized by a purple-colored nebulous region and consisted of a winding closed loop of asteroids that also contained a higher concentration of the matter making up the surrounding nebulosity.

History

A promising idea

Hype Fazon (center) suggested to Captain Imanuel Doza (third from right) that the Colossus visit the Voxx Cluster.

The Lobber, a known criminal, once told his partners-in-crime, Wungo and Ghor, that the Voxx Cluster was a type of candy. While on the planet Valboraan in 33 BBY, Wungo, frustrated by the Lobber's incompetence, dismissed this claim as false. At some point in time, the Hutt Vranki, who originally came from the Voxx Cluster, established both Vranki's Hotel and Casino and a high-stakes starfighter racing circuit there. He also served as the initial racing sponsor for the pilot Hype Fazon, who learned to race among the Voxx Cluster's asteroids and was considered by Vranki to be the best racer to come out of the circuit. Fazon eventually left Vranki's employment and became a pilot for the Ace Squadron, based on the station Colossus.

In 34 ABY, the Colossus was struggling with a shortage of credits to purchase supplies, while the First Order was in the midst of hunting the mobile station. During this time, Fazon proposed to the Colossus's captain, Imanuel Doza, that he allow the Ace Squadron pilots to participate in racing within the Voxx Cluster. This would not only satisfy the pilots' desire to race but also provide a potential way to earn much-needed money for the Colossus.

Casinos and races

After Doza agreed to the proposition, the station journeyed to the Voxx Cluster. A shuttle then transported Doza, the mechanics Jarek Yeager and Neeku Vozo, and the Ace Squadron pilots Fazon, Torra Doza, Kazuda Xiono, Freya Fenris, Griff Halloran, and Bo Keevil to Vranki's Hotel and Casino. While there, Torra and Xiono observed a trio of Vranki's racing starfighters—actually droid starships—competing on the asteroid race course through the casino's viewport, with one of the racing craft detonating after colliding with an asteroid.

Confident in his ability to succeed in any competition held on the Voxx Cluster circuit, Fazon then agreed to race against one of Vranki's racers, with the condition that he would become indentured to the Hutt if he were to lose. Vranki, his announcer droid TC-G3, and Fazon's companions observed the event from the casino. During the race, the Ace Squadron pilot noticed that his competitor, whom he believed to be organic, was flying through the Voxx Cluster at a speed faster than any other racer he had seen on the circuit.

Fazon ultimately lost the race, during which the true nature of the droid racers was revealed. Captain Doza then negotiated another agreement with Vranki, who consented to organize an impromptu race known as the Voxx Vortex 5000, where the other Ace Squadron pilots would compete against Vranki's droids to win back Fazon's freedom. Fenris also lost her race, followed by an attempt by Keevil. To distract the pilot and cause him to lose, Vranki activated free-floating magnetic mines that detonated one of the Voxx Cluster's asteroids. Halloran raced next, but he also lost because Vranki used cannons placed on some of the asteroids.

Finally, Torra and Xiono entered the Voxx Vortex 5000 as a relay race against Vranki's droids. The droid racing against Torra slowed her down by firing its on-board blasters, destroying several of the Voxx Cluster's asteroids in the process. During the subsequent leg of the race, Vranki again used magnetic mines, cannon emplacements, and the droid racer's own weaponry to impede Xiono's progress. Despite these obstacles, the pilot, who deviated from the course to head straight for the finish hoop, ultimately won the Voxx Vortex 5000. Captain Doza and his team then departed from Vranki's Hotel and Casino with their newly acquired credits, and the Colossus left the Voxx Cluster.

Locations

The Voxx Cluster was home to Vranki's Hotel and Casino.

Vranki's Hotel and Casino was located in the Voxx Cluster. The casino's viewports provided a view of the nearby asteroid racing circuit, and the establishment's hologames were based on it. The dangerous nature of the race course attracted new pilots, who sought the thrill of overcoming low odds and proving their abilities against the hazards of the asteroid field.

The course was equipped with several free-floating finish hoops, modified with the addition of a pair of cannons, as well as two holoprojectors that created a holographic countdown screen for the racers. Additionally, to help his racers win, Vranki used several cannon emplacements on the race course's asteroids and a number of free-floating magnetic mines that, when activated, would follow a specific racing craft through the asteroid field.

Behind the scenes

Jim Moore's concept art of the Voxx Cluster

The Voxx Cluster made its debut in "The Voxx Vortex 5000," the ninth episode of the second season of the television series Star Wars Resistance. The episode was broadcast on December 1, 2019. Before the premiere of "The Voxx Vortex 5000," the asteroid field was shown in a trailer for Star Wars Resistance Season Two, which was released on the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 14 of that year. On November 27, 2019, the name of the Voxx Cluster was revealed in a preview of the episode on the same channel. Jim Moore, an artist at Lucasfilm Animation, created a concept art illustration of the Voxx Cluster on April 6, 2018. On March 24 of the same year, Aaron Pham created a concept art illustration of the exterior of Vranki's Hotel and Casino, which is located in the asteroid field.
