The Voxx Vortex 5000 represents a pivotal contest during the First Order-Resistance War. This event showcased the Ace Squadron pilots from the Colossus refueling station competing against racing droids. These droids were the property of Vranki the Blue, a Hutt casino magnate. The stakes were high: the liberation of fellow Aces and the acquisition of Colossus' needed credits to procure essential supplies for the station.
Before the eruption of the First Order-Resistance War, Hype Fazon earned his living as a racing pilot under the employ of Vranki, a Hutt who ran a hotel and casino situated within the Voxx Cluster, an asteroid field. Hype's racing career preceded his departure to the Colossus space station above Castilon, where he rose to lead the Ace Squadron. Over time, Vranki gained notoriety for his unscrupulous business dealings, which included manipulating hologames and race outcomes. Vranki commanded a squadron of racing droid and a service droid named TC-G3, who managed his racing operations.
Following the devastating Hosnian Cataclysm, Team Colossus, spearheaded by Kazuda Xiono, Jarek Yeager, and the station's Captain Imanuel Doza, successfully ousted First Order forces from the Colossus. Subsequently, they took the station into the vastness of space. In retaliation, Captain Phasma tasked Commander Pyre and Agent Tierny with the mission to hunt down the Colossus, recognizing its vital strategic significance to the First Order. The Colossus faced several encounters with First Order elements, including the BB-series astromech droid MB-13A, the undercover spy Nenavakasa Nalor, and Pyre's Resurgent-class Star Destroyer within the Ileenium system and near a signal beacon. However, the Colossus managed to evade capture on each occasion.
As the extended journey through space wore on, the Aces grew restless, deprived of their racing passion due to the constraints of war. The Colossus also faced financial difficulties due to the shutdown of its racing industry. Recognizing an opportunity, Hype persuaded a hesitant Captain Doza and Yeager to entertain his proposal to race at Vranki's circuit. This plan aimed to generate much-needed funds while providing the Aces with a chance to indulge in some "fun."
The Aces, along with Captain Doza, Xiono, Yeager, Neeku Vozo, and their droids, journeyed to the Voxx cluster. Vranki welcomed the Colossus delegation, as his business had suffered a decline in customers due to the ongoing First Order-Resistance war. Following negotiations between Vranki and Hype, Hype agreed to Vranki's proposition: winning the race would secure 25,000 Credits. However, defeat would force Hype to remain and become an indentured racer. The confident Hype accepted Vranki's challenge to compete against Team Vranki.
However, Vranki resorted to cheating during the race, deploying his racing droid to impede Hype's progress, leading to his defeat. Vranki's dishonesty infuriated both Hype and Captain Doza. Captain Doza declared his delegation's departure, but their exit was blocked by two of Vranki's Kowakian ape-lizards. Vranki warned his guests to adhere to his rules within his casino. Subsequently, Neeku discovered that the hologames in Vranki's casino were rigged. Kaz theorized a connection between the hologames and the racing droids' algorithms. As the team's engineer and tech expert, Neeku agreed to investigate and devised a strategy to outsmart Vranki.
Meanwhile, Vranki presented another wager. To reclaim Hype, Captain Doza and Yeager would need to send another racer to compete against his droids. Victory would secure Hype's return, while defeat would result in the loss of both Hype and the new racer. While Yeager opposed the wager, Kaz convinced Captain Doza that Neeku had a plan to defeat Vranki, persuading him to accept the challenge. Following the second round of negotiations, Vranki instructed TC-G3 to initiate preparations for the Voxx Vortex 5000.
The remaining Ace pilots, Freya Fenris, Bo Keevil, and Griff Halloran, took turns racing against Vranki's racing droids. Despite the racers' and Yeager's skepticism regarding Kaz and Neeku's theory linking the hologames and racer droids, they chose to take the risk due to the lack of alternatives. However, Team Vranki employed underhanded tactics, including ship-ramming, magnetic mines, and concealed laser cannons, to defeat the Aces, turning them into indentured racers. Despite Neeku's guidance, they were outmatched by Vranki's sophisticated droid algorithms. Despite Vranki's blatant cheating, Captain Doza and his delegation were powerless due to Vranki's monopoly on power and force.
By this point, Torra Doza and Kazuda Xiono were the only Aces left, and they were determined to compete in order to liberate their comrades. Kaz decided to raise the stakes by volunteering himself and Torra against Vranki's droids. Torra escalated the stakes even further by offering the Colossus as collateral. Captain Doza initially opposed the idea, but Torra argued that the station was defenseless without the racers. Recognizing his daughter's point, Doza relented but convinced Vranki to add 500,000 credits to match their wager. Eager to acquire the space station and confident of victory, Vranki agreed. Vranki also promised to release the other Aces if he lost the race.
Neeku committed to helping Kaz and Torra secure victory in the final race. Torra and Kaz raced against Team Vranki. Neeku, harassed by several Kowakian monkey-lizards clinging to him, struggled to guide Torra and Kaz. During the race, Torra's racer, Blue Ace, was struck by laser fire, preventing it from reaching the final hoop first. Meanwhile, Xiono successfully evaded two magnetic mines by luring them into the asteroid field, resulting in their destruction.
As Kaz and Vranki's racing droid raced toward the final hoop, Vranki activated the hoop's laser cannons. However, Kaz outsmarted the racing droid by positioning his ship beneath it, using it as a shield against the cannons. Simultaneously, Neeku managed to deactivate the final hoop's laser cannons, allowing Kaz to pass through the racing hoop and win the race.
Kaz's triumph in the final leg of the Voxx Vortex 5000 enabled the Colossus delegation to reclaim their Ace pilots, rescuing them from indentured servitude under Vranki. In addition to losing the wager on the Colossus, Vranki was also obligated to pay the 500,000 credits he had wagered on the station. These credits would provide much-needed funds for the financially strained space station. Vranki attempted to lure Hype into racing for him in exchange for a life of luxury. However, Hype wanted nothing to do with the dishonest Hutt businessman. Neeku also returned home with several new Kowakian monkey-lizard companions.
The Voxx Vortex 5000 made its debut in the Star Wars Resistance Season Two episode "The Voxx Vortex 5000," which premiered on Disney XD on December 1, 2019.
