Grievous's Munificent-class star frigate (suspected Confederate space)

During the time of the Clone Wars, General Grievous, a Kaleesh Separatist, utilized a Munificent-class star frigate within the Confederacy of Independent Systems' naval forces. This occurred after his previous Munificent-class star frigate's demise at the Battle of Bothawui in 22 BBY. Grievous, along with another Munificent, employed the newly acquired vessel in an ambush against Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker while the Jedi was on a mission to sweep a Separatist space corridor. Despite this, Skywalker successfully evaded Grievous and his Munificent.

Description

The Munificent-class star frigate measured 825 meters in length, 426 meters in width, and 243 meters in height. This vessel was equipped with a hangar bay on the port side, which housed its contingent of Vulture-class droid starfighters, a hyperdrive generator, seven ion drive thrusters, and a pair of long-range hyperwave transceiver masts. The Munificent's armament included two heavy turbolaser cannons, two heavy long-range ion cannons, and thirty-four twin light turbolaser cannons positioned on both the port and starboard sides. The emblem representing the Confederacy of Independent Systems was prominently displayed on each side of the frigate's hull.

History

Following the Battle of Bothawui, which took place in 22 BBY during the Clone Wars fought between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker traveled to a sector of space suspected to be under Separatist control. Upon his arrival after exiting hyperspace, Skywalker instructed his astromech droid, R3-S6, who was secretly working as a Separatist spy for the Kaleesh cyborg General Grievous, to activate the long-range scanners on his starfighter. However, the droid instead activated the fighter's tracking beacon. This signal quickly alerted Grievous, as well as two Munificent-class star frigates, to Skywalker's location. Subsequently, Skywalker ordered R3-S6 to prepare for a jump to hyperspace, but the droid detached the fighter from its hyperspace ring, which was then destroyed by enemy fire, removing their chance of escape.

Grievous then commanded his forces to launch everything they had at Skywalker. A battle droid questioned the necessity of such force against a single, trapped fighter, but complied upon Grievous's reiteration. A large number of Vulture droid starfighters attacked the Jedi. Although Skywalker managed to destroy many with his fighter's blaster cannons, R3 disabled both the cannons and the engines, allowing more Vulture droids to overwhelm the immobilized Jedi starfighter. However, Skywalker was rescued by his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Clone Captain CT-7567, nicknamed "Rex," aboard the G9 Rigger-class light freighter Twilight, who had tracked the beacon to his location. R3 reactivated the engines, and Skywalker piloted his fighter into the Twilight's cargo hold as it fought off the remaining vulture droids. Grievous ordered his frigate and the other to converge, attempting to block the Twilight's escape. However, the freighter managed to slip between them and jump to hyperspace, causing the frigates to collide and leaving Grievous with damaged ships and enraged at the Republic forces' escape.

Behind the scenes

This particular Munificent-class star frigate was featured in "Downfall of a Droid," the sixth episode within the first season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was originally broadcast on November 7, 2008.
