Jay's Padawan lightsaber

Jee Ken Tsokee's, also known as Jay's, weapon of choice as a Padawan was a lightsaber with a single blue blade. He was once a Jedi Padawan. Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars, Jay transitioned into a career as a singer with the band Star Waver. He repurposed his lightsaber, transforming it into a microphone for use in his performances.

Description

The human singer known as Jee Ken Tsokee, or "Jay," wielded a Jedi lightsaber. When activated, the saber emitted a single blade of blue light. Like all Jedi lightsabers, Jay's was powered by a kyber crystal.

After sustaining damage, Jay's weapon became unreliable for [lightsaber combat](/article/lightsaber_combat]. Consequently, he modified it into a microphone, which he then employed to create music as the frontman of the band Star Waver.

History

During the Clone Wars, a conflict spanning the galactic scale between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Jay fought as a Jedi Padawan wielding his blue lightsaber, serving as a Jedi Commander. In 19 BBY, following the execution of Order 66, which commanded clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic to betray and kill their Jedi commanders, Jay escaped from a battle. He inadvertently fell into a vehicle belonging to Hutt guitarist Geezer Odajion, resulting in damage to his lightsaber. Subsequently, Jay joined Odajion's band, Star Waver, and began utilizing the lightsaber as a microphone for musical performances.

Jay's lightsaber failed to activate against bounty hunter Boba Fett.

During the Imperial Era, Jabba Desilijic Tiure, a crime lord of the Hutt species, placed a bounty on Odajion, leading bounty hunters to disrupt a Star Waver concert. While Jay's bandmates quickly defended themselves, Jay was hesitant to use his lightsaber for combat. However, when Boba Fett captured Odajion, Jay confronted the bounty hunter, but his lightsaber failed to ignite, only emitting sparks from the hilt instead of its blue blade.

Star Waver negotiated with Jabba to perform their song "Galactic Dreamer" at the Mos Espa Grand Arena on the desert planet Tatooine before Odajion's execution. A Gamorrean guard stopped Jay, thinking the lightsaber was a weapon. Jay convinced the guard that it was just a microphone, allowing him to perform and use his former weapon to project his voice in song.

Behind the scenes

The short film "Tatooine Rhapsody" in the Star Wars: Visions series, directed by Taku Kimura of Studio Colorido and released on Disney+ on September 22, 2021, introduced Jay and his lightsaber. Kimura explained in an interview for Disney+'s "Filmmaker Focus" that he created Jay to showcase the power of music. Jay wanted to break free from his Jedi past and rock out with Odajion and their bandmates. Kimura told the interviewer that his studio wanted to send the message to do what you want and not be caught up in the past; and converting Jay's lightsaber from weapon to microphone expressed that theme strongly. Kimura believed that the diverse storytelling of Star Wars allowed for unconventional uses of lightsabers, such as Jay's transformation of his into a microphone. Concept art sketches of the lightsaber appeared in the 2022 reference book The Art of Star Wars: Visions, written by Zack Davisson.
