Plot summary

After Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire falls, the One Sith retreat into hiding. A new governing body, the Galactic Federation Triumvirate, is formed, comprising the Jedi Order, the Fel Empire, and the Galactic Alliance Remnant. Empress Marasiah Fel initiates an ambitious endeavor aimed at connecting the Outer Rim Territories to the rest of the galaxy. In the year 138 ABY, she sends the Imperial Knight Yalta Val to the Carreras system to oversee the final phases of construction on the Carreras G51 communications array. While traveling through the treacherous Surd Nebula, Val's shuttle is attacked by a Sith master and his apprentice, resulting in a crash landing on the floating world of Mala. After the Sith eliminate Val's soldiers, the Sith master manages to gain the upper hand and disarm Yalta Val. However, the apprentice then murders the master, having his own agenda for the Imperial Knight he has captured. Yalta Val's Imperial communications droid is able to retrieve his lightsaber, but it is then hit by asteroids and lost in space. One week later, a pair of spacers discover the communications droid and reluctantly sell it to Ania Solo, a young Human woman who operates a junkyard on Carreras Minor's moon. Meanwhile, the Sith apprentice assumes Master Val's identity and is rescued by the Carreras authorities. Falsely claiming that there is a Sith presence in the Carreras system, the Sith impostor manipulates Governor Biala into granting him complete control over her security forces. On the Carreras Minor ice mining platform, Ania shows her discovery to her Mon Calamari friend Sauk. While inspecting the droid, Ania and Sauk find a blue lightsaber. Seeing it as a quick way to make money, Ania and Sauk decide to sell it to another junk dealer in order to escape the impoverished Carreras system.

On Coruscant, Empress Fel and other members of the Triumvirate, including Admiral Gar Stazi and Jedi Master K'Kruhk, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of her ambitious G51 galactic communications project. On the Shifala homeworld of Carreras Major, Ania and Sauk attempt to sell the lightsaber but are thrown out by the shopkeeper. Soon after, the Carreras security forces pursue the two companions. Following a confrontation, Ania kills a security officer. Meanwhile, on Mala, Yalta Val is revealed to be the prisoner of the mysterious Sith apprentice, forced to wear a Sith mask.
