Mantell Mix

Mantell Mix, packaged in cartons, was a snack food available for purchase in Ord Mantell City. A Pantoran merchant offered each carton of the snack for a price of seven credits. The young clone Omega and the clone commando Wrecker had established a post-mission ritual of enjoying this snack. Wrecker would charge the cost of the mix to Ciddarin Scaleback's account, accumulating charges equivalent to twenty cartons of the treat. During the Bad Batch's assignment to Bracca, Omega carried some Mantell Mix in her pocket and later presented it to Wrecker as a gesture of reconciliation for his actions while under the sway of his inhibitor chip. Bolo and Ketch, two frequent patrons of Cid's Parlor, subsequently utilized Mantell Mix as bait to abduct Ruby, the beloved pet of the criminal Roland Durand.

Description

Mantell Mix was a crispy snack that originated on the world of Ord Mantell. The snack consisted of small, spherical pieces with textured surfaces, exhibiting white and various shades of purple colors. It was suitable for consumption by humans, Ithorians, and Weequays, in addition to a certain species of reptile.

History

Omega and Wrecker's tradition was to get Mantell Mix after a mission.

Mantell Mix became available in Ord Mantell City shortly after the establishment of the Galactic Empire. A Pantoran seller retailed the snack from a booth for seven credits per carton. The clone fugitives Wrecker and Omega, whose team began working as soldiers of fortune for the local source of information Ciddarin Scaleback, formed a habit of acquiring cartons of Mantell Mix following missions, charging the costs to Scaleback's account rather than paying themselves. By the time the group returned from an operation to steal a reptile from the Rhokai gang, the pair had accumulated a debt totaling twenty cartons, which was included in a list of expenses that Scaleback presented to group leader Hunter. The inclusion of the Mantell Mix on the list was particularly surprising to him, as he was unaware of it.

Omega had a supply of Mantell Mix with her when the Bad Batch traveled to the scrap planet Bracca so the clone commandos could undergo surgery to remove their implanted inhibitor chips, which had been responsible for turning the clone army against the Jedi during Order 66. However, before his procedure could begin, Wrecker's chip activated, leading him to attack the other clones, whom he perceived as betrayers, cornering and almost ending the life of Omega before he was brought under control. Following the successful completion of his surgery, Wrecker expressed his apologies to Omega for his actions while under the influence of the chip. As a token of forgiveness, she offered him the mix she had carried, stating that they could not break tradition now that the mission was over, and they shared the snack.

Upon the Batch's return to Ord Mantell after a battle with Imperial forces and Omega's retrieval from the bounty hunter Cad Bane, Omega and Wrecker shared a carton of Mantell Mix. As they ate, Echo took a portion of the mix and sniffed it with a suspicious expression.

Later, Cid's Parlor was seized by the criminal Roland Durand and his henchmen. As part of Scaleback's scheme to reclaim her establishment, loyal customers Bolo and Ketch kidnapped Ruby, Durand's pet, by luring the reptile out of the bar using a trail of Mantell Mix left behind by Ketch, before Bolo confined her within a cage. While guarding against Durand and his enforcers, Ketch regularly provided Ruby with Mantell Mix to keep her quiet until Bolo accidentally dropped her cage.

Several months later, Omega and Wrecker engaged in a game of dejarik, using crates of Mantell Mix as the stakes. After defeating Wrecker once again, Omega declared that he owed her two cartons before Scaleback intervened and brought their gaming session to a close.

Behind the scenes

Mantell Mix made its debut in the Star Wars: The Bad Batch episode "Battle Scars," which premiered on Disney+ on June 11, 2021. In the initial drafts of the episode's script, the snack was intended to be Outpost Mix, similar to that served at Kat Saka's Kettle within the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge theme park, which represents the world of Batuu. However, this was changed to Mantell Mix after the decision was made for Ord Mantell to possess its own distinct version of the snack, although the final iteration still bears a strong resemblance to Outpost Mix.
