Obri was a planet of the gas giant type, accompanied by a trio of moons, situated within the Tython system found in the Deep Core region of the galaxy. Together with Mawr, another gas giant in the star system, Obri was known as "the Giants" by the Tython system's inhabitants. Over 36,000 years prior to the Battle of Yavin, the non-Force-sensitive settlers of the planet Tython established colonies on the moons orbiting Obri. By 25,793 BBY, facilities for gas mining had also been constructed within the atmosphere of the planet itself.
A planet classified as a gas giant, Obri resided in the Tython system, which was located in the Deep Core area of the galaxy. It was the ninth orbital body from its sun, Tythos, and was orbited by three moons, one of which was Zerist, a frigid and volcanic moon. The inhabitants of the Tython system collectively called Obri and Mawr, another gas giant and the tenth planet in the star system, "the Giants." Some believed, based on myths and conjecture, that enormous and ethereal claud beings dwelled in the gas giant's thick atmosphere, drifting idly through the air.
The settlers of Tython, the fifth planet in the system, who lacked Force-sensitivity, traveled to nearby worlds more than a millennium after 36,453 BBY; they then colonized Obri's moons. By 25,793 BBY, facilities for gas mining were also in place within the atmosphere of the planet. In that specific year, Ketu, a Temple Master from the mystical Je'daii Order, recounted the history of the Tython system to Harun and Resi, who were Padawan learners. This included the colonization of Obri's natural satellites. By this point in time, former adherents of Hadiya, the overthrown queen of Shikaakwa, were concealing themselves on Obri's moons, where mining operations had also been launched.
The first visual depiction of Obri occurred in the Tython entry in The Holonet section of the official website for Star Wars: The Old Republic, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game from 2011 created by BioWare. A schematic diagram of the Tython system featured the gas giant. Since its inception in 2008, The Old Republic's website has undergone numerous revisions, leading to the removal of certain features and images, including the aforementioned diagram. The Essential Atlas, a reference book by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace that came out on August 18, 2009, placed the Tython system, and therefore Obri, in grid square L-10. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi 0, a preview edition of the Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi series of comic books, furnished Obri's name and further details. John Ostrander wrote the issue, Jan Duursema penciled it, and it was released on February 1, 2012. The first and ninth issues of the series, published on February 15 of 2012 and March 27 of 2013, respectively, also mentioned the planet. The short story Eruption, penned by Ostrander and appearing in issue one-hundred-forty-first of the Star Wars Insider magazine, unfolds on Zerist, one of Obri's moons.
