Omi

A Force-sensitive dianoga named Omi made her home within the confines of garbage masher 3263827 located on the Death Star.

Description

Similar to other members of her dianoga species, Omi was a sentient, carnivorous cephalopod characterized by several hearts, seven tentacles equipped with suckers, and a singular eyestalk extending from the center of her form. Her skin was a shifting purple hue, capable of adapting to the surrounding environment, and her eye was green with a red sclera. Omi's height reached 10.0 meters.

History

Prior to the events of the Battle of Yavin, Omi engaged in a conflict with Iduna, a male of her species, who sought to trade eggs. Omi's inherent Force-sensitivity granted her the advantage needed to overcome Iduna.

At a later point, Omi was captured on her homeworld by the indigenous Vodran, who then delivered her to Imperials destined for the Death Star. During her transport to the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, she experienced a vision foretelling fiery destruction and subsequently broke free from her confinement. Attempting to escape the vessel by utilizing her species' innate camouflage abilities, she was discovered by two Imperial stormtroopers. Despite defeating the stormtroopers by embracing what she termed "It," she realized escape was impossible and returned to her containment, eventually arriving at the Death Star. Once aboard, Omi had another vision of fire and was disposed of in a garbage chute, leading her to garbage masher 3263827, where she sustained herself by consuming the organic waste that fell within.

Following the rescuing of Princess Leia Organa on the Death Star, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Luke Skywalker found themselves temporarily trapped inside garbage masher 3263827, in the year 0 BBY. Acting upon the beliefs of her people, Omi submerged Skywalker in the water, performing a "baptism" after sensing his "submission to It," before releasing him. As the compactor's cycle initiated, the dianoga retreated into the depths of the water. When Luke Skywalker emerged from the trash compactor unharmed, Omi foresaw his future greatness.

Leading up to the Death Star's obliteration, Omi continued to deepen her connection to "It," developing the ability to telepathically levitate objects. Upon the fulfillment of her vision and the Death Star's destruction, she contemplated her destiny in the afterlife.

Behind the scenes

Omi, along with her species, the dianoga, made their debut in the original 1977 film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which served as the introductory chapter of the Star Wars original trilogy. Nnedi Okorafor, the author of the short story "The Baptist" featured in the anthology From a Certain Point of View, revealed Omi's name in a preview of her short story on September 16, 2017. Okorafor explained that she chose the name Omi for the dianoga because it signifies "water" in the Yoruba language.

In George Lucas' revised fourth script of A New Hope, Omi, or the dianoga, was referred to as "Dia Nogu," as a nod to the earlier drafts where the Jedi were known as "Dai Nogas" or simply "Dai." The initial scripts for the film did not consistently include Omi or the trash compactor sequence. In the final version of the film, Lucas was reportedly underwhelmed by the visual effects of the dianoga, as he had envisioned a more imposing and ominous presence.

In 2015, Chuck Wendig, the writer of the novel Aftermath, expressed his interest in potentially crafting stories centered around Malakili, Chief Chirpa, or Omi. However, he ultimately focused on Malakili in his subsequent novel, Aftermath: Life Debt.
