R4-P17, nicknamed R4, was a brave but cautious feminine R4-P astromech droid assigned to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, both before and throughout the Clone Wars. She was destroyed by a buzz droid during the Battle of Coruscant.

Biography

Separatist Crisis

R4-P17 was manufactured by Industrial Automaton sometime prior to the Clone Wars.A model of the R4-Psub-line of the R4 astromech,the feminineastromech droid accompanied Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to Kamino and Geonosis as the Jedi sought to uncover the mysteries behind the assassination attempts on Naboo senator Padmé Amidala that occurred on the galactic capital Coruscant.

The Clone Wars

Tatooine

R4 protects Kenobi's starfighter from Jawas.

R4 continued to serve Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars, after gaining an Astromech Body that allowed her to roam outside the Jedi starfighter. She accompanied her master to the planet Tatooine to negotiate with Jabba Desilijic Tiure. At one point, Jawas approached Obi-Wan Kenobi's starfighter as R4 stood in the droid socket, waiting for him to return. She electrocuted one of the Jawas to defend herself and the starfighter and they left. She later traveled to the planet Teth with her master to assist Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano in rescuing Jabba's son, piloting Obi-Wan Kenobi's starfighter after he jumped from it to fight in the battle on the surface of the planet.

Rodia

R4 was roaming the halls of the temple and later traveled with Obi-Wan Kenobi to Rodia to prevent the bounty hunter Cad Bane from abducting Wee Dunn.

Mandalore

R4 traveled to the planet Mandalore with her master to discuss an Attack on a Republic cruiser with Satine Kryze. R4 was left behind while her master traveled to Sundari Royal Palace.

Battle of Sullust

R4 participated in the Battle of Sullust, during which she and her master were shot down by Asajj Ventress. The pair escaped when the Command ship was destroyed.

Jedi Temple

R4 was present, alongside R4-M1 in one of the corridors of the Jedi Temple as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu were discussing Yoda.

During the final days of the Clone Wars, R4-P17 joined Obi-Wan Kenobi once again aboard his Eta-2 Actis-class light interceptor in a battle above Coruscant. During the battle, Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker approached Separatist General Grievous' flagship, the Invisible Hand, in an attempt to rescue the kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. As the two Jedi neared the flagship, they were attacked by vulture droids that launched discord missiles at the pair. While Anakin managed to trick the missiles into destroying themselves, Kenobi could not, resulting in a payload of buzz droids that landed on his starfighter. Kenobi warned R4-P17 to be careful, but by that time, the buzz droids had already sawedherdome off, destroying her.She was later replaced by R4-G9 as Kenobi's companion droid during his travel to the planet Utapau.Decades later, a picture of R4 in Obi-Wan Kenobi's Eta-2 Actis-class interceptor was in the Galactic Explorer's Guide, a survival guide written by Hondo Ohnaka and DK-RA-43.

Personality and traits

R4 was an R4-Pastromech droidwith feminine programmingwho stood at 0.96 meters (3 feet, 2 inches) tall. She had a red replacement dome from another astromech droidand had an electro-shock prod.She displayed bravery and quick reflexes, acting immediately and skillfully when Jawas attempted to attack herand during the fight against Slave I, the Battle of Tethand the Battle of Coruscant.She also demonstrated bravery throughout the Clone Wars as she fought against the Separatists.She was also cautious and was a companion to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

―Obi-Wan Kenobi to R4-P17As a product of Industrial Automaton, R4 was designed to serve as a hyperspace navigator capable of calculating lightspeed jumps. She also served as an engineer for repair and maintenance.She was effective at information retrieval and was a good starfighter pilot.

Equipment

R4 had an electro-shock prod that she used to protect Kenobi's Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor from Jawas during a visit to Jabba's Palace.

Behind the scenes

R4-P17 made its first appearance in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, the second installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
