A re-ignition hoop served as a type of sky ring, and it was used in races that took place on the planet Castilon. This hoop's function was to reactivate the disabled engines of any racing starfighter that managed to fly through it successfully. During one particular race, known as the Platform Classic, falling racers passed through the hoop following a phase of the race called the "Powerless Plummet." In this phase, they would gain altitude only to have their engines disabled by an ion pulse just before their descent.
In one iteration of the Platform Classic, which occurred in 34 ABY, the racers Marcus Speedstar, Torra Doza, Hype Fazon, and Freya Fenris, along with the mechanic Jarek Yeager who was also participating, all made it through the re-ignition hoop during their rapid descent. However, Griff Halloran, another racer, failed to pass through the hoop, largely due to Speedstar's competitive piloting. As a result, Halloran was compelled to eject from his ship when it crashed. Neeku Vozo, the mechanic, anxiously explained the ring's significance to Kazuda Xiono, a spy for the Resistance, because he knew that the pilots who failed to pass through it were destined to crash.
The re-ignition hoop made its initial appearance in "The Platform Classic," which was the ninth episode of the first season of the animated television series Star Wars Resistance. This episode premiered on November 25, 2018. In the episode's audio commentary, Christopher Sean, who voiced Kazuda Xiono, and Myrna Velasco, who voiced Torra Doza, discussed the re-ignition hoop's effects. They explained that it caused the pilots to accelerate toward the ocean of Castilon, forcing them to overcome the g-force of the rapid descent in order to maintain consciousness.
